Wedding Photography

How to plan your wedding photography.

Wedding photography, whatever the style, is in the end about a single thing. Properly capturing the events and atmosphere of your special day in a way that will preserve the memories and rekindle the emotions for as long as you both shall live. Couples take very different approaches to the taking of wedding photographs. Some take the view that quantity will lead to quality; that taking hundreds of pictures on the day will guarantee some good ones. Others take the view that a few well-placed photos taken by a professional is the better route. Both options have their pros and cons. As wedding photographers tend to be quite expensive, you may choose to save on budget and recruit digital camera wielding friends instead. Unfortunately, if you choose this option quantity does not guarantee quality. You may get lucky, but it will be a real shame if you don’t. Friends may not necessarily take the role seriously and may get sloppy with their pictures, particularly if they are also concentrating on enjoying themselves.  On the other hand an expensive photographer may do an excellent job with structured ceremony pictures, but may not be able to capture well the party atmosphere of the reception. Friends do enjoy taking pictures, however, and as the happy couple can’t possibly be everywhere all the time, their pictures will be a great way to see the bits you missed. Why not leave disposable cameras on every table and encourage the guests to use them? Certainly you will get some blurry and badly structured pictures, but hopefully you will also get some gems and the cost will be minimal! Make sure, however, somebody reliable takes responsibility for those key moments. You will after all once in a lifetime only, (hopefully!) be thinking about wedding photography!

Wedding Photographer

Choosing a wedding photographer.

Your wedding photographer needs to be a professional. It’s as simple as that! His work on your wedding day will be, aside perhaps from that of the Videographer, the one tangible memory that will last for as long as you both shall live. Statistics show, however, that whilst people may only watch their wedding video 8–10 times in a lifetime, photographs are brought out time and again as the years go by to rekindle those special memories. This service is perhaps, therefore, not the place to cut corners. The advantages of a professional are that they will make use of top quality equipment, which otherwise may need to be hired anyway. They will understand how to make the best of the lighting available, taking quality pictures whatever the location. Remember the lighting might vary hugely between indoor and outdoor scenes, well-lit and dingy churches, good and bad weather conditions. When thinking about bestowing the photography responsibility on a friend, consider whether they could be relied on to take a good picture in the rain! It is probably a good idea to discuss with the photographer in advance exactly what kind of photos you will want as keep sakes. Quintessential moments such as the exchanging of rings and ‘you may now kiss the bride’ should go without saying, but make sure you specify them anyway. Other key moments you may wish to remind your wedding photographer to capture are: ‘here comes the bride’, ‘cutting the cake’, ‘the bouquet toss’, ‘confetti throwing’, ‘arrival and departure in the wedding car’ and of course ‘anything the children do!’ For many couples a professional at the service is enough. There will, however, also be the opportunity after the ceremony to get photos of the bride and groom plus groups of guests; family, friends, best man/men, bridesmaids, father of the bride and bride etc. These pictures will often lend themselves also to capturing some of the venue highlights on camera also: A professional here will try to integrate any beautiful scenery, or memorable features of the wedding venue in the pictures.
