HOW TO GET GIGS

How to be a DJ

Whether you’re aspiring to become a mobile wedding DJ or perform in some of the world’s top nightclubs, becoming a successful DJ is an incredibly long and arduous process.

However, for those who continue to strive, work hard and market themselves are likely to gain success.

Being a good DJ is all about playing the right music to fit the mood of the crowd. Mixing between tracks with clean transitions and good flow.

This skill can only be developed through years of practice and experience. To begin with, DJs should try and get all the live experience they can.

Getting started with DJing

  • It is important for DJs to train their ears so listen to lots of music and count along to songs in 8,16 and 32s. Also try to hear the intros, verses, choruses, bridges, builds and breakdowns.
  • When getting started, try and mix two tracks of similar BPM and throw each track on the first beat to get used to monitoring through headphones and using the turntable. DJs can then start to bring in the mix, playing with the EQ and cross fader. Practice by speeding up and slowing down the records.
  • Thanks to 21st century technology, DJs can now create accounts on Soundcloud and BeatPort to showcase their skills to potential promoters and private clients. By creating and upload a mixtape, DJs can not only show off their scratching skills but also their ability to choose suitable songs which progress well into each other. For specialist DJs, a mixtape can also be a great way to show off the new beats and mixes that you have created.

Crowd pleaser or music specialist

Most DJs specialise in one genre, for instance techno, however the successful ones do this whilst also being able to play other genres such as jungle, house, drum and base and breakbeat.

Up and coming DJs may be offered gigs, such as weddings, private events and small parties where playing hits from both contemporary and classic pop music will guarantee a satisfied audience.

For many DJs this will not be their desired ideal gig, however for those who are striving to create a successful career these types of gigs offer much needed experience and payment.

Build up your gear

Those at the beginning of their DJ career will need to accumulate  all the necessary equipment to begin performing.

For those with little or no experience, it is important to remember that there is no need to purchase the most expensive and professional equipment, amateurs should learn to DJ on cheaper equipment, before investing in a quality mixer.
