Throw a 1950′s or 1960′s Themed Wedding

February 1, 2012 by Admin

Choosing a themed wedding can be quite a bold move. It can also take a lot of extra planning if you are really going to go to town and get all your guests dressed up alongside the venue and everything else that goes along with it. However, the benefits of holding a themed wedding can be numerous. It definitely won’t be your run of the mill party like everyone else does. Your guests will certainly remember their experience.

 The Look

A themed wedding is all about the visuals. Think about the overall aesthetic that you are trying to achieve by picking some famous people for your chosen decade as examples. The Beatles would be an obvious choice for a 60s theme with big hair and cheap suits. No 1950s party would be complete without some sort of Elvis lookalike and lots of rock and roll style attire.

The Sound

Check out these 1950s Bands for Hire as a first step for planning your 150s style party. Or these 1960s Bands for Hire for your 60s event. An authentic looking and sounding band from your chosen decade is an absolute must for any themed wedding! What better than a Buddy Holly impersonator to get your guests in the mood for dancing and twisting the night away.

The Cost

You don’t have to spend a fortune to get your event looking really stylish. The new fashion for vintage clothing means that you can pick up period fashion for a really good price. With music, if you can’t afford a live band then you could always just play songs from cds or mp3s and make more of the decorations in your venue to set the scene. The main thing is to plan your budget and then make your event fit within it!

How to Throw a Fabulous and Frugal Weekend Party

December 21, 2011 by Admin

Easy! Follow my top tips and you don’t have to spend much at all, just a bit on food and drink.

Food first. Pizza one night, Mexican the next. Because both can be bought in bulk quantities, either pre-cooked or to cook yourself. And neither requires people t get all formal, which can really harsh the buzz of a great weekend party at home.

Get some really cheap pizzas, just basic cheese and tomato sauce ones, and buy a load of veggies and stuff to make your own toppings. Cook with your guests, then they can design their own pizzas – which they’ll love, and which helps to break the ice when some guests don’t know others.
All you need to pre-prepare is salad – again, nice and cheap. And get in a bunch of budget garlic breads to stick in the oven while you all create your pizzas, then people can snack away and soak up the booze while they do it.

Entertainment is a big part of a weekend party. I would suggest music, or episodes of a great TV comedy while you cook; and then music after, for the first night; with games to take centre stage on the Saturday.

One brilliant way to get everyone involved and have a bit of unusual fun is to have a murder mystery party. These can be purchased ready made, everything you need in a box including a DVD of clues (with a host on it, who guides you through the action). You send out invites before the weekend, so guests can create and bring an appropriate costume – and then you have a dinner party where each course reveals more about the murder!

OK so I know I said finger food – but this is a different tack. Entertainment and eating all rolled into one. Or you could arrange a few things to occupy your guests – a quiz, charades, games of Pictionary. Anything you can play drunk where everyone gets involved all at once. Or think about having a fancy dress theme for the Saturday night. Do pirates and put pirate films on (silently) on the TV for atmosphere while you all; boogie to your favourite cheesy tunes!
If you are having a weekend party at home near neighbours, you should invite them. It’s the easiest and safest way to make sure they don’t get annoyed by all the noise you are making. They can hardly complain if they were dancing round your living room to Abba too!

I would also recommend planning a day out for the daytime on Saturday, just to get you all out of the house. Unless you have a massive house with plenty of garden, in which case you can all chill there all weekend. It’s up to you of course – you know your home, your friends and your local area better than I do.
If there’s something you like to do locally on a regular basis, get your friends involved. They’ll love it and it will make you all feel like a part of one big group, which is exactly what you need for a weekend party.

Bulk buy alcohol from your local supermarket. They may be the devil’s work but they are at least cheap. You can get enough booze to float a whole three day party for a very reasonable amount just by going for all the bulk discounts they have going when you get in there. Oh – and don’t forget late night munchies too. Crisps and snacks are a must!

Wedding Music Idea #12

August 25, 2011 by Admin

If you are on a tight budget or simply do not have the space to accomodate a large band, there are hundreds of solo or duo musicians to hire that can provide perfect entertainment for your wedding!

These acts can also control the volume of their music more easily which would be handy if you were in a smaller venue and did not want a 10 piece band deafening all of your guests!

Solo acts could be chosen to play with a backing track which would give the impression of a full band playing but without all of the extra hassle.

Click here to check out some top quality professional solo and duo acts.

Hire a Big Swing Band!

If you can afford it, a classic 1920s 25 piece ‘Big Band’ gives a live presence and sound that can’t be beaten. Whilst there can be up to and above 25 musicians in the band, it’s worth it. It’s a great way to finish your wedding reception in style. We can guarantee  you won’t be disappointed! You can also book various smaller ensembles who would still be able to recreate that classic swing band style.

Wedding Music Idea #9

July 1, 2011 by Admin

Choosing the playlist for your big day can be hard. Usually, the bride and groom choose their favorite songs that are most meaningful to them. But with all the different types of dances; mother-son & father-daughter dances, dollar dances, interludes & preludes and the wedding reception reception itself. Naturally, It can be difficult to find enough songs!

Below are popular wedding songs:

First Dance: Harry Connick, Jr. – It Had to Be You

The first dance is usually a song that the bride and groom share, sometimes it reminds them of when they first met.

Mother-Son Dance: Stevie Wonder – ‘You are the sunshine of my life’

A Mother-Son dance A tradition where the groom and his mother dance. Often the dance takes place after the first dance.

Father-Daughter Dance: The Temptations – ‘My girl’

Father-Daughter dances where the bride dances with her father is much like the Mother-Son dance. The Father-Daughter dance comes after the Mother-Son dance.

Dollar Dance: Dire Straits – Money For Nothing

The Dollar Dance originated in Poland in the early 1900s. During the dollar dance the male guests have the opportunity to dance with the bride. Occasionally the female guests pay to dance with the groom.

Ceremony Hymns: Give me joy in my heart

Ceremony hymns are quiet, background music. Suitable for a wedding ceremony.

Bouquet Toss/Garter Toss: Cyndi Lauper – Girls just wanna have fun

Traditionally the bride tosses her Bouquet over her head to her brides maids. The woman who catches the bouquet is supposed to be the next to get married! In some cases, the bride will throw her garter to the male guests. Often after removing it from her leg.
