If there is one question that gets asked by brides and grooms to-be across social media more than any other, it is this one: should I book a live band or a DJ to serve as the entertainment for my event? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this blog (assuming you cannot afford to employ both!) we\u2019ll go through the pros and cons of both acts, and help you figure out which one will be perfect for your big day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s an obvious point to make, but every event is different. As such, will have different requirements of their entertainment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps your event will have a strong theme that you would like to reflect in your choice of entertainment (and it is absolutely plausible to do so!) or maybe you are hosting your event in an unusual location. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Either of these factors will affect your choice of entertainment and should be considered in advance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lastly, this definitely IS NOT supposed to be adversarial\u2026 there\nare some great reasons for employing BOTH a DJ and a band if you have the\nbudget to do so!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Live Wedding Band<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For many people, getting married without booking a live band (at least for your evening do) is unconscionable. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, there are both arguments for and against booking a band, and there will be scenarios where having live music simply isn\u2019t appropriate, or practical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For:<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe magic\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The first reason to book live music is the simplest – there\nis nothing quite like the experience of hearing your favourite songs, played by\na live band. It\u2019s actually quite a hard feeling to describe. You could call it\nmagic\u2026 or call it whatever you like! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether it\u2019s the opening guitar riff to \u201cWhole Lotta Love\u201d or the synth-drenched intro to \u201c24k Magic\u201d, there is nothing quite like that moment when the hairs on the back of your neck stand up as you hear the opening bars of your favourite tune, played live. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For many people, this reason alone will be ample reason to book a live band.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are a great talking point<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In some respects, weddings are funny occasions. It\u2019s a gathering of people from all the different areas of your life and there is very little guarantee that they will all know each other. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As such, it never hurts to have some kind of talking point, to help encourage conversation between strangers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether it\u2019s a musician playing over a drink\u2019s reception, or your evening band\u2019s choice of repertoire, \u201cThe band are great, aren\u2019t they?\u201d is a brilliant conversation starter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Engaging interaction\/ great focal point<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s hard to think of circumstances where you wouldn\u2019t<\/em> want to pack out the dance floor at your wedding, but ensuring it is a done deal in advance is very tough. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, it could well be argued that a live band is more of a natural focus point for people\u2019s attention than a DJ, just down to the nature of their performance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Between that and the increased likelihood of more interaction with the crowd from a band, and you can definitely make the case that a band will have an easier time getting your guests up and dancing. Playlist <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Most bands nowadays will be able to offer a playlist of recorded music for in between sets. While this probably won’t be up to the standard of a professional DJ, it will avoid there being a big drop in energy or atmosphere between performances. Curious about what your band might play? Expense<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

It may sound obvious, but the more members an act has, the\nmore they will have to charge. As such, if you are looking to book a standard\n4-piece wedding band, you will probably have to fork out more money than if you\nwere booking a solo DJ. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Space<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A band will usually have a much bigger set up than a DJ, and\nso will naturally require more space. This can present a challenge when your\nwedding is taking place in a smaller, more intimate venue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Set up time<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If (for whatever reason) your wedding is very tightly scheduled, it is worth considering that a band will require much more set up time than a DJ. They will also need a soundcheck to balance the levels of their instruments. This will have to take place at a much greater volume than that of a DJ, and take up more time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sound levels<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If your venue has particularly vicious sound restrictions, then a live band may not be for you. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

While most bands will be happy to work around some form of sound restrictions (even if they are policed by a sound limiter) there are some venues where the restrictions are so severe that it is virtually impossible for a live band to work. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For this reason, always inform your act of any restrictions in advance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Booking a DJ has been a classic solution to wedding\nentertainment for years and years, and with very good reason! A DJ is a highly\nflexible, fun and affordable option for entertainment at your wedding, and\nworthy of serious consideration!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Incredibly flexible and versatile<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps the best point going for DJs is their versatility. While a band can take weeks to learn new material, a DJ has access to all of your favourite songs at the drop of a hat (or, indeed, the click of a mouse!). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s very commonplace to provide your DJ with a list of songs that you would like to hear on the day, as well as a \u201cbanned!\u2019 list of music that you definitely DO NOT want to hear (need inspiration? Here are 60 songs you should never play at a wedding<\/a>). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Requests throughout the night are going to be much easier for a DJ to fill than a live band. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Easy set up<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Unlike a band, a DJ can be up and running in very little\ntime. This will depend a little on whether the equipment they are using is\nin-house (some venues will have resident DJs that use their venue equipment) or\nwhether they are setting up their own PA system but, generally speaking, it\nwill take a DJ less time to set up than a full live band, and can soundcheck at\na much lower volume.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Affordable <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Usually a DJ will be one person, or two people at most, as most\nwedding DJs don\u2019t have a huge entourage! The advantage of this is that it keeps\nthe costs relatively low, compared to a large touring band. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

They take up little space<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A DJ won\u2019t have the burden of large guitar amplifiers, drum\nkits, keyboards and other things that can take up space. This means that they\ncan squeeze into spaces that large acts simply cannot!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They can effectively manage volume levels <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Due to there being no acoustic instruments used in a DJ\u2019s set, they can manage their sound levels much more effectively than a live band. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This makes them perfect for events where there are strict volume restrictions in place, such as shows at particularly historic venues or hotels with lots of other guests asleep upstairs.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

While some DJ\u2019s will happily interact with a crowd, the majority will be happier simply sitting back and spinning the tunes, focussing on the music. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This can make it harder for an audience to form a genuine connection with a DJ, and therefore potentially less likely to get on the dancefloor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s important to point out that this is not the case for every DJ!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arguably less unique<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A big advantage that a band has over a DJ is their flexibility towards song arrangements \u2013 a band can play a fast song in a slow style, a slow song in a fast style, a rock song in a reggae style, etc etc, whereas a DJ is pretty much stuck with the original versions of the tunes (or potentially remixes).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some DJ\u2019s will have a Unique Selling Point to combat this,\nperhaps playing from an all-vinyl back catalogue or specialising in one\nspecific genre of music, like soul or funk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Harder to gauge a DJ\u2019s \u201cstyle\u201d in advance<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

With a band, it is pretty easy to get a measure of how they will look, sound and interact from their promotional material. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is arguably harder to get this from a DJ\u2019s promotional material, as it will rarely feature their specific performance, and usually focus more on the gear that they have available, like lighting and speaker set up, or potentially shots of the crowd and testimonials.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
