Whether you’re looking to supplement your gigging income or build a full-time teaching practice, online lessons offer flexibility and reach that in-person teaching can’t match. In this guide, we’ll cover the pros and cons, as well as what it takes to get yourself set up…

Becoming an online music teacher isn’t easy. You’ll need to work out the teaching materials you need, source the relevant equipment and promote yourself to get a list of students.

You’ll also have to consider other important factors, like tax for musicians, insurance and safeguarding.

Many musicians say they offer a teaching service, but don’t put enough time or effort into promoting it or considering what they are going to teach.

This can prove detrimental to their reputation, so it’s worth carefully considering whether teaching is really for you.

Why teach online?

Instrument lessons have played a part in how many musicians earn their living for as long as anyone can remember.

They offer a route to making a reasonably stable and predictable income, which is not something that can be said of every aspect of your portfolio career as a musician.

While it can be argued that it is easier to teach a student in person, there are still many advantages to teaching online. Such as:

Advantages to teaching online

You get to work out of your home.

You can cut down on travel expenses.

You can teach international students.

You can work from virtually anywhere in the world, if traveling.

You can set your own prices.

You can work around family commitments, and pick your own hours.

What you will need to get started

Your equipment list will vary a little, depending on what instrument you are looking to teach.

Obviously, some instruments are going to be easier to teach online than others, and every instrument could possibly require something different.

However, there are a few universal basics that all online tutors will need.

If you’re looking to get yourself set up as an online tutor, you should consider registering with Music Tutors Online. This will help speed up your computer’s response time.

It’s also worth considering how good the quality of your camera is, as you will need your students to be able to see what you are doing clearly.

While a tablet or phone might seem convenient, they have much smaller screens and that can prove problematic when teaching.

External equipment

If you are taking your teaching seriously, then you might want to experiment with a more nuanced set up than your basic laptop can provide.

External speakers, or a headset, can improve on your ability to hear your students.

A basic condenser mic will help them hear more of what you are doing. If it is movable, then this might prove very handy for acoustic instruments, like the acoustic guitar.

However, you need to be very careful about things like feedback, and always try out your set up in advance.

A good video calling App

There are two strong contenders for your video calling App, as detailed by The Musicians’ Union advice:

Zoom is a widely used software that offers a good picture and sound. While the materials might cost you money to source, it is definitely a time-saver compared to creating everything from scratch.

Remember to consider the copyright of any material you use. Look at the government’s policy on copyright for educational purposes for more information.

Exams and grading

If your students are working towards graded exams, you will need to familiarise yourself with the relevant exam boards and their requirements for remote or online examinations. The main UK exam boards for music include:

RSL Rockschool

Trinity College London

ABRSM

Royal College of Music

Many of these boards now offer online or video-based exam options alongside their traditional in-person exams, so it is well worth checking their latest guidance before preparing your students.

Do you need qualifications to teach music online?

One of the most common questions aspiring music teachers ask is whether they need formal qualifications. The good news is that, in the UK, there is no legal requirement to hold a teaching qualification in order to offer private music lessons. Many successful online music tutors are self-taught or have learned through years of performing experience.

That said, having recognised qualifications can significantly boost your credibility and help you attract students. Graded music exams from boards like ABRSM, Trinity College London, or RSL Rockschool demonstrate a proven level of ability. A diploma such as a DipABRSM, ATCL, or LTCL can further set you apart. Some teachers also hold music degrees or postgraduate qualifications in music education.

If you plan to teach children, you should strongly consider obtaining a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check. While it is not a legal requirement for self-employed private tutors, it reassures parents and demonstrates your commitment to safeguarding.

How much can you earn teaching music online?

Earnings for online music teachers vary widely depending on your experience, qualifications, instrument, and location. As a rough guide, private music lesson rates in the UK typically range from around £20 to £60 or more per hour. The Musicians’ Union’s suggested minimum rate for a qualified music teacher is currently around £42.50 per hour, though many experienced teachers charge significantly more than this.

Please note that rates vary and the figures above are intended as a general guide only. We recommend checking the Musicians’ Union website for their latest suggested rates.

Setting your prices and getting paid

When setting your lesson prices, consider factors such as your level of experience, your qualifications, the instrument you teach, and the going rate in your area. It can be helpful to research what other online tutors charge for similar lessons.

Make sure you have a clear cancellation policy in place, as missed lessons and late cancellations can quickly eat into your income. Many teachers require at least 24 hours’ notice for cancellations, or charge a fee for no-shows.

For payment, bank transfers, PayPal, and services like Stripe are all popular options.
