About / Biography

Paul has been playing the pipes since 1972 and was originally taught by Pipe-Major Bert Barron BEM, one of Scotland's leading players and teachers. Over the years he has played with several prizewinning bands and has appeared on TV and radio. More recently, he has played with several renowned military bands, also accompanying the accomplished soprano Faryl Smith, and with André Rieu's world-famous Johann Strauss Orchestra. He also plays the Scottish small pipes - a quieter alternative to the Highland Pipes - in folk trio Tobas, alongside talented singer-songwriters Tony Beysens and Lol Moran.

A fluent French and German speaker, he also has s smattering of Russian and Japanese. Paul is available to add that certain flourish to special events such as commercial promotions, weddings, funerals, Burns' Suppers and special occasions of every type. He will always appear in Highland dress suitable for the event, wearing with Muted Hunting Robertson (green) or Royal Stewart (red) tartan. He has a large repertoire which includes many popular marches, strathspeys, reels, jigs, hornpipes, laments and slow airs. He will also play for Highland and ceilidh dancing.

He lives in Stratford-upon-Avon, within easy reach of Birmingham and the West Midlands, but will travel to any part of the UK or abroad, even at short notice. He is available seven days a week. Previous clients include VisitBritain, the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, the Royal Shakespeare Company, Radio Luxembourg and the German TV channel ZDF. Paul has extensive experience of trade fairs and exhibitions. His skill at piping has taken him to most of Europe, Canada and the USA.

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

"Paul really made our wedding day, he was absolutely brilliant. Would highly recommend! "
"Paul was absolutely fantastic at our wedding. We found him to be excellent and timely at communicating with us. He made valuable suggestions regarding the pieces of music to play at our wedding. Paul also accommodated our special requests, even though these were unusual pieces to play on the bagpipes. On our wedding day, Paul turned up on time, dressed to impress and played exceptionally well. Even the rain did not deter him from leading our guests from the church to the hotel venue where we held our celebrations. Having Paul playing bagpipes at our wedding added a very special touch to our very special day. We would highly recommend Paul to anyone who is thinking of having a bagpiper at their special event. "
"Excellent, Paul was very helpful, he made excellent suggestions for the running order and our guests enjoyed his playing."

Shpuld an indoor audience wear ear defenders?

No. The bagpipes are loud, but no-one has ever been killed by one.

Do you use any amplification?

No. I play acoustically. This means that there should be no need for public liability insurance.
