About / Biography

Kayo – Violinist & Pianist from Japan

Hello! I’m Kayo, a versatile violinist, fiddler, and pianist from Japan, now based in Scotland.

With a strong classical music background, I have performed as both a solo pianist and accompanist for a wide range of instruments in Japan. Over the years, my musical style has grown to include elegant classical violin, expressive fiddle, Scottish traditional music, and beautifully arranged pieces from film, anime, and game soundtracks.

I specialise in creating memorable live music for weddings, drinks receptions, anniversaries, memorial ceremonies, private events, and intimate venues such as cafés, hotels, and country houses. From graceful aisle music to warm background performances, each set is thoughtfully tailored to suit the atmosphere of your event.

One of my signature styles is blending the beauty of Japanese musical sensitivity with the charm of Scotland, creating a unique and heartfelt sound that guests remember long after the event.

Whether you are looking for solo violin, fiddle, piano, or a bespoke combination of styles, I would be delighted to help create the perfect musical atmosphere for your special occasion.

Please feel free to get in touch to discuss your event, venue, and favourite pieces.

Technical Info

What are your basic technical requirements?

For solo performances, I usually need a performance space of around 2m x 2m. For duo performances, a space of approximately 3m x 2m is ideal. Access to one standard power socket (or two for amplified duo performances) and nearby parking is always very helpful for smooth setup.

Do you provide sound and lighting equipment?

Yes — for solo performances I can provide a small PA/speaker setup suitable for wedding ceremonies, drinks receptions, and intimate venues. For acoustic settings such as churches or smaller spaces, amplification is often not necessary.

What information do you require about a venue?

Parking and access information are always very helpful, especially for quick and easy setup. For outdoor events, it’s also useful to know whether there is a covered performance area in case of rain.

Can you provide a Spotify/DJ service before and between your sets?

I’m happy to play suitable background music before and between live sets when a speaker setup is in use, helping to keep the atmosphere smooth and elegant throughout the event.

Can you perform outdoors, such as in a garden or open garden day, without electricity?

Absolutely. Solo fiddle performances work beautifully outdoors without electricity, making them perfect for garden parties, open garden days and nature events.

I can also perform acoustically with other musicians where suitable. In these settings, being reasonably close to the audience helps create a warm and intimate atmosphere, and no microphones are needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever played at?

One of the most unforgettable performances of my career was at Expo 2025 Osaka, where I performed Scottish and Japanese fusion music for an international audience.
It was incredibly special to bring the sound of Scotland to Japan in such a global setting, and to see people from many different countries connect through music.
The atmosphere was electric, emotional, and deeply meaningful, reminding me how music can beautifully bridge cultures and create shared memories.

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

I’ve been deeply inspired by the elegance of Mozart, the poetry of Chopin, and the dramatic brilliance of Liszt.
For violin, Bach’s clarity and structure continue to guide my musical thinking, while Paganini inspires my love of virtuosity and expressive freedom.
Among living artists, I’ve always admired Itzhak Perlman for the warmth and humanity in his sound, and I’m also inspired by musicians who blend tradition with personality, much like the Scottish folk world I now perform in.
If I could create even a few seconds of sound that stays in someone’s heart, that would be the greatest music of all.

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

My musical journey began in Japan, where I performed as a violin section leader in school orchestra from my secondary school years and received awards for piano performance throughout childhood.
After moving from Japan to the UK and taking time away from music while raising my family, I gradually returned through teaching piano and violin.
My professional gigging career then grew naturally through weddings, private events, and collaborations, eventually leading to international performances including Expo 2025 Osaka.
Today, I specialise in elegant solo violin, piano accompaniment, and bespoke Scottish–Japanese fusion performances for weddings, receptions, and cultural events.

What's your favourite type of event to play at?

My favourite events are the ones where music becomes part of a meaningful memory.
I love performing at weddings, where music adds joy and elegance to one of life’s happiest moments, but I’m equally honoured to play at memorial services, where music can bring comfort, love, and remembrance.
One especially moving experience was performing for a memorial celebration of a daughter who would have turned 40, which reminded me how deeply music can hold emotion and memory.
From international stages such as Expo 2025 Osaka to intimate outdoor moments in the rain at Easter fayres or even beside the Fairy Pools on the Isle of Skye, I love creating music that becomes part of a place, a story, and a lasting feeling.

Do you perform at children’s events?

Yes — I love performing for children’s events and family audiences.
I can also bring simple percussion instruments such as tambourines, triangles and hand bells so young guests can join in and enjoy the music.

For interactive sessions, I’m happy to bring a few small violins as well, so children can safely try the instrument and experience making their first sound.

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

For solo violin or piano performances, I usually arrive 45–60 minutes before the event to set up and sound check.
Typical performances range from elegant 15–20 minute ceremony music to 2-hour drinks receptions, background music, or bespoke sets for larger celebrations.
For longer events, I often perform 2 x 45-minute or 2 x 60-minute sets with a short break, but I’m always happy to tailor the timing around speeches, dining, or special moments.
Duo performances usually require around 60–75 minutes for setup depending on the instruments and sound requirements.

Are you happy to perform outside?

Yes, I love performing outdoors, from elegant garden weddings to atmospheric locations such as the Isle of Skye.
I simply ask for a flat, safe surface, some shelter or shade if possible, and a nearby power source when amplification is required.

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

Absolutely — I love including personal requests and meaningful songs that make the event feel truly unique.
Clients are very welcome to choose pieces from my repertoire, or request special songs for key moments such as the ceremony, signing, drinks reception, memorial tributes, or surprise celebrations.
For bespoke requests, I simply ask for at least 2–3 weeks’ notice so I can prepare the arrangement beautifully for violin, piano, or duo performance.

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

Clients often describe my performances as elegant, atmospheric, and deeply personal.
My violin style blends classical refinement with Scottish traditional fiddle and Japanese musical colours, creating a fusion that feels both unique and emotionally memorable.
Many clients also love the versatility of my piano performances, which can move seamlessly from elegant background music to meaningful featured moments throughout an event.
