_________________________________

  • Smooth Jazz Quartet - Piano, Bass, Drums & Female Singer - we have all been professional musicians in the past.

  • We are not young! Some of us are on albums on original vinyl - back when there was only vinyl!

  • Now we appear at private parties (large & small), corporate functions, dinner & dance evenings, 1950s nights, garden parties, weddings, anniversaries and so on.

  • We fill dance floors with young & old playing the smooth jazz hits everyone knows from better days ... Sinatra, Ella, ... 'and all that Jazz!'

  • Your guests will have a night they will remember fondly.

Each of us quit the music industry professionally decades ago; but individually we’ve gigged all our lives, playing every type of venue: from town halls to village halls, from music pubs to the iconic venues across Europe, from bucolic country Inns to big stage festivals, and even the occasional football stadium!

We formed this band just recently, solely for the joy of performing the songs we love:

The Lady is a Tramp - Fly Me to the Moon - Beyond the Sea - Night & Day - You'd be so Nice to Come Home To - The More I See You - The Look of Love - The Girl from Ipanema - East of The Sun - Sway - On Green Dolphin Street - Cheek to Cheek - Besame Mucho - Can't Take My Eyes Off of You - Every Time We Say Goodbye ... and many many more.

EXTRACTS OF RECENT REVIEWS FROM OUR PREVIOUS BANDS:

.. “Exceptional players”

.. “Lovely vocals”

.. “Made us all feel like we were in 'Jazz on Summer's Day' back in 1957!"

.. “They are real old pro's, extremely tight group."

(Note: you will see some lovely reviews on here which relate to a 70s band some of us were in that featured on LastMinuteMusicians.com between 2019 & 2024. The more recent reviews are for The LJQ.)

WHY SUCH A LOW PRICE?

Our fee is modest because, unlike some of the younger top function bands, we no longer do this for a living. After we left the music industry we’ve all had professional ‘grown-up’ careers - we don’t need to charge a big fee.

CURRENT DISOUNT:

Because this is a newly formed band we are currently offering a 50% discount for our first summer, at £500

NEED A LOWER QUOTE? ...

However, if our fee is still a tad too much for your particular party budget, tell us all about your event, ask for a lower quote, and we'll see if we can accommodate you. (We've lived long enough to know that a playing small party for nice folk in a village hall cam often be more fun for us than appearing at a glitzy corporate fund-raiser.)

We’re very friendly, we're mature, we're highly educated and we're excruciatingly easy going.

If you book The LJQ then the last thing you'll need to worry about when planning your party will be the band!

Feel free to get in touch without obligation and ask for what you need; and if we can accommodate we will.

Thank you for reading our profile.

One mains plug hole.

Do you provide sound and lighting equipment?

We have state-of-the-art equipment, vintage instruments, and a 1000w PA system with fold-back.

We do bring some lights from time to time but we find we don’t really need them to add to our performance.

What information do you require about a venue?

Where it is and what time you want us on!

Can you provide a Spotify/DJ service before and between your sets?

We can provide music for you before we go on, during our break and afterwards. Or you can plug your playlist into our PA system.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever played at?

Best gig ever:
A Moulin Rouge night at Birmingham College of Art in 1975 - unforgettable audience!

Best Venues:
Town Halls, Universities, big-stage Festivals, iconic rock venues across Europe - see a list later in these FAQs.

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

Most influenced by :
Sinatra, Ella, Sarah Vaughn, Chet Baker, Oscar Peterson, Diana Krall, Monk, Miles, Basie, Bill Evans, Dave Green, Martin Drew, the MJQ, Sonny Rollins, Ben Webster, Harry Conick Jnr, etc., etc.,

Favourite:
Frédéric Chopin

Greatest Song of All Time:
Daft question … “When Father Papered the Parlour You Couldn’t See Him for Paste” ?

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

Two of us started gigging when we were 14.

As for our gigging experience since then, see previous answers. We’ve ALWAYS gigged. Collectively we’ve been gigging for over 200 years 🤣

What's your favourite type of event to play at?

These days our favourite bookings are private parties, celebrations in village halls, summer garden parties, dinner & dance events, beer festivals outside bucolic pubs.

What do you mean by “Smooth Jazz”?

Best to look at our song list. We mean songs from the American Song Book played smoothly to make people dance - NOT blast be-bop.

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

We don’t set performance times. You’re the customer. You tell us performance times.

Most clients want two sets of between 45 minutes to an hour each; but we are flexible.

Are you happy to perform outside?

Yes we are used to playing outside. In recent previous bands we’ve played:

- at people’s garden parties during the summer, many times,

- at opulent weddings in the grounds of Jacobean mansion houses

- at small parties in tiny back yards (which tend to be more fun!)

Last year in a previous band, some for us were directed to a random field on the South Downs to play at a Travellers’ wedding - wonderful gig!

We like meeting and entertaining nice people.

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

We are happy to learn your favourite song for you if it fits. (So, not ‘The Yellow Rose of Texas’.)

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

What folk have said most about bands we have played in recently is that we are excellent players and how much we sound like all the different artists we cover.

Below is a sample of a few our many reviews for previous bands we’ve been in:-

“Fabulous musicians. Lovely singer. I cannot recommend them highly enough.”

“Outstanding players and great vocals”

“What a band! Outstanding musicians playing songs that we all knew. Right from the very beginning people were up and dancing right up to the last encore.”

“Fab song choices. Incredible musicians”

“Really friendly people who played all the classics, and even welcomed my dad up to play the drums. Everyone had a lovely evening, would definitely book them again”

“ …. they were brilliant musicians one and all and kept everyone dancing until well after midnight. We were AMAZED at what we paid for what we got”
