About / Biography

Welcome to the bio of Richard Ellis Hawley, a multi-genre musician who blends elements of multiple genres (including an extra vocalist) to create a unique and captivating sound. Their eclectic mix of styles keeps me on my toes, never quite knowing what to expect next. One moment you are grooving to a funky bassline straight out of the 70s, the next you're lost in a dreamy, ethereal electronic soundscape. Hawley seamlessly transitions between genres, weaving together influences from rock, hip-hop, jazz, classical, and everything in between. What sets Hawley apart is their masterful musicianship and ability to effortlessly switch between genres without missing a beat. Each track is a journey, taking the listener on a sonic adventure that keeps you coming back for more. Whether your in the mood for a high-energy dance track or a laid-back ballad, Hawley has something for every mood and occasion. Their music is a true testament to the power of genre-blending and showcases their versatility as a musician. Overall, he has been highly recommended - check out Hawley's music if you're looking for something fresh, and downright impressive. Their ability to fuse together multiple genres seamlessly is a testament to their talent.

Richard has a keyboard of his own or can play an instrument in situ.

What information do you require about a venue?

"We need to know any directions that will help us find the venue and find the right place to load in our equipment. We’d also need to be informed if there’s a sound limiter in the venue."

Can you provide a Spotify/DJ service before and between your sets?

"Yes, we’re happy to play music from Spotify before, after and between our sets. We’re happy to choose the music ourselves or let the client choose the music."

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever played at?

The Thistle hotel in Liverpool on the 175th Anniversary of Cunard

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

Elton John: His iconic pop and dance music have always been a crowd favourite, and we love incorporating hits like Crocodile Rock and Rocket Man into our sets."

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

18th October 1992 –
I went to church this morning with my Mum, it was a different church this morning as it was a joint service between the 2 Methodist churches in Tauranga – but for some reason it was all quiet – no music was playing – the organist was there well before everyone else playing as we came in. I was not really interested though; I was only a middle of the road teenager. 9.30am and the service started, and the vicar (Neil Keesing) processed in as normal, well not normal there was still no music.
Suddenly Neil said do we have any musicians in the congregation our organist has not turned up. So, me being me I went up and said I could play one finger as I had had brass band experience of 6 years. I knew the notes, later on we all got invited to a BBQ and I noticed a Yamaha AR100 which I have at home now (not the same one!!)

What's your favourite type of event to play at?

We love playing at all sorts of events but weddings are our favourite! The guests are always happy and it’s easy to get them dancing."

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

"We normally arrive 2 hours before the performance to set up. We normally perform 2 x 45 minutes or 2 x 60 minute sets. We’re happy to play a bit longer or shorter but we’ve found that these set times suit us and our audiences best."

Are you happy to perform outside?

We’re happy to play outside but we ask for shade, a flat level surface and a power supply close to the performance area."

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

"We can learn specific songs before the event but we usually limit this to 5 songs. The clients are welcome to pick a set list from our repertoire or let us choose the music for them."

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

"Previous customers would describe us as a high energy group that loves to get the audience on their feet dancing."
