| Solo vocal/guitar performance of up to 3 hours (with 2 short breaks) | £250 |
An active musician since his teens, Sci-Fi Jim has performed both solo and in bands of various sizes, covering styles including rock, folk, country, blues, jazz, indie, rock and roll, alt-country and Americana.
A versatile multi-instrumentalist (playing, among other things, guitar, bass, keyboards, drums, harmonica, mandolin, bouzouki and percussion), Jim has been playing live shows since the 1990s and completed a number of session recordings for several artists from different genres. He is currently recording a series of solo covers albums, which you can hear samples from on SoundCloud, Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music and other major platforms. (Note - these are often multi-instrumental tracks and so are a little different from the live performances, but they'll give you an idea of what SFJ is about!)
For live solo shows, he mostly plays acoustic guitar (with octave bass emulator), bass drum, tambourine and harmonica. No backing tracks are used - everything you hear is live. Comfortable playing shows of up to 3 hours (with two breaks), and longer by arrangement in advance, his repertoire includes a range of well-known classics (including Dock of the Bay, Drift Away, Sit Down, Stand By Me, New England and (around Christmas) Fairytale of New York), along with several lesser-known but upbeat songs specially chosen and tailored to suit the event.
His style is adaptable, from mellow afternoon jazz and blues through to end-of-the-night party songs, and he crafts the set in real time to accommodate the type of audience he's playing to. With many years of experience, professional equipment and an immaculate reliability track record, Sci-Fi Jim is definitely worth any venue taking a chance on.
--- Jim is based in Anstruther, NE Fife, and is willing to travel anywhere in Scotland by negotiation. For longer distances (generally over 80m miles), overnight accommodation may be required, but for the central belt same-day return travel is usually fine. Posters can be tailor-made and posted to venues in advance if needed. ---

Yes - I can provide filler music before, between and after sets in broadly the same genres as my own sets.
I've played in a lot of venues over the years, of all sizes (up to and including arenas). Particular favourites include the Edinburgh Playhouse and the former Hammersmith Odeon, though I also have many small venues on my list of favourite places to play. I've supported an eclectic range of artists over the years, too, including The Strawbs, Eric Bibb, Primal Scream and Roy "Chubby" Brown (yes, really...).
I'm influenced by songwriters and instrumentalists in equal measure. I love many of the big-name writers, including Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Steve Earle, Paul Simon and Willie Nelson. Guitarists who launched me on this journey and continue to amaze and inspire include Ry Cooder, Richard Thompson, Peter Green, Jeff Beck and more. I also really appreciate great musicians on other instruments, inlcuding drummers like Jim Keltner, Stanton Moore and Jay Bellerose, and bassists such as Danny Thompson and Tony Levin.
I've been playing since my mid-teens, and have worked with a range of artists from very loud original rock bands to very quiet traditional folk musicians.
I love playing intimate venues where it's possible to build a rapport with the audience. As someone who looks beyond the typical choices (Oasis, Abba, Neil Diamond, etc.), I particularly enjoy playing for people who are curious and open-minded about music.
I usually need around an hour to set up and pack down. Most sessions run for three hours, with two short breaks, though other set lengths can be accommodated.
Yes, I can perform outside, and I have a small battery-operated setup that can be used when mains power isn't available.
There is some flexibility and I can consider requests in advance, though this would involve some discussion with the client.
Audiences and venues appreciate the quality of the musicianship and the sound, and tend to value my choice to move away from the most common covers in favour of something a little different.
