About / Biography

Hi, I'm Jim, a professional Percussionist, steel pan musician and Educator for Thirty Five Years, specialising in the Steel Pan for the last Twenty Years.

I pride myself on being a good listener, warm, engaging, easy to talk to, responsive, and in going 'that extra mile' to provide the best experience for my clients and participants. I'm very happy to discuss any ideas you may have about an event you're thinking of organising, no matter how quirky or different your idea may be!

As a Steel Pan musician with my own music workshop company my UNIQUE SELLING POINT with Steel Pan is that, in addition to playing live, I also offer hands-on STEEL BAND WORKSHOPS which are fantastic fun to take part in, with no previous musical experience required. They're hugely rewarding and uplifting for all age-groups, and in a wide range of settings, such as:
Community events
Corporate Away-days and Training
Cruise-Ships, Activity Holidays and Retreats
Hen Parties (and other group gatherings)
Retired, Elderly, people with Dementia, SEN and Disabilities
Festivals
Education
Celebrations and Private parties.

"Jim Bernardin is a fortissimo teacher and entertainer at the top of his game" - 'SecEd' and 'The Stage' Publications

My STEEL PAN MUSIC REPERTOIRE is full of iconic songs, with backing tracks I have arranged myself, probably favouring the songwriting eras of the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's, covering genres such as calypso, reggae, classic pop, soul, jazz, samba and more.

I'm also very happy to learn a favourite tune for your special occasion, whether that be for a bride or groom, birthday or anniversary.

I try to answer all enquiries within a few hours, and look forward to chatting about your event or idea.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever played at?

So hard to answer this, but the best was probably my 25-piece community steel band, sharing the stage with 20 children from Soweto, South Africa, with their marimbas, performing African and Caribbean music together to a full house at a fundraising event that we had organised for their charity

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

Too many influential artistes to answer this, But in terms of playing steel pan live, the music of Lord Kitchener, Harry Belafonte, The Mighty Sparrow and Bob Marley have been influential to me. More contemporary artistes include Antonio Carlos Joabim, Chick Corea, and 70's music in general.

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

I began my musical journey as a drummer, leading me to five years at sea onboard CRUISESHIPS, then studying for degrees, Taking up and performing on Marimba and Steel Pan, and developing percussion and STEEL PAN WORKSHOPS

What's your favourite type of event to play at?

I love to play at events where I feel the music can make a difference, whether that be setting the tone with uplfting background music, playing a bride down the aisle, bringing people together in a workshop, or providing an evening of entertainment and dancing with live music.

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

For Gigs/Live playing - 1/2hr to set up (although I allow for longer always) and playing up to 3hr duration with breaks
For Workshops - 1 hour to set up and workshops duration usually 1 - 1.5 hrs on average, depending on type of booking.

Are you happy to perform outside?

Yes

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

I do like to engage clients in choosing a few favourite of theirs mixed in with my standard type of repertoire.

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

Uplifting, Heartwarming, perfect volume when background music, Danceable and inspiring.

If I book a steel pan workshop, does it matter if we're all beginners? Will it be noisy?

Both answers would be 'No'. My workshops are designed for beginners, and the results on steel pan are amazing, even with no previous experience. It's the perfect instrument for bring a group together to create a warm, mellow, melodic sound, that isn't overly loud or noisy, but does generate excitement and an uplifting 'feel-good factor'.
In terms of a live music booking, though the pan can be loud in its traditional large-band carnival setting, (e.g. Trinidad or Notting Hill), a small ensemble or a soloist can produce subtle, mellow background level music that travels through the air but doesn't sound loud or interfere with conversation.
