About / Biography

Starting out life as a busking trio in 2010, the Swing Ninjas are one-of-a-kind. Blending vocal harmonies and a mix of New Orleans' swing and vintage UK jazz (with a modern musical flair), this Brighton (UK) based band provides an authentic, up-to-date approach to the sound of a raucous 1930s band to all stages and parties that can fit them on.

Their smaller setups (trio, quartet) are perfect for canapès, house parties, sunny outdoor champagne receptions and wedding parades/wedding breakfasts. The bigger bands are good for evenings and larger events (quintet to tentet) - with drums, piano and a much bigger sound.

With over 80 million combined YouTube views, 2 original albums and 4 albums of classic US-UK jazz/swing, it’s little wonder this fun-loving, charming and soulful group play over 150 shows a year!

100-year-old music is given a breath of fresh air by the highly skilled, energetic performance, group vocal harmonies, immaculate dress and tongue-in-cheek charm of the band. This is not stagnant swing and jazz as you know it – the sweat and passion is real.

The band can perform in various sizes – the smaller groups are perfect for afternoon or evening drinks, with the bigger band suiting larger events or where dancing is encouraged. Trio to 10-piece band available – comprising of saxes and brass, guitar, double bass, piano, drums and group vocal harmonies.

Gig highlights include the Bahrain Jazz Festival, Pizza Express Live (London), Virgina (USA), Casablanca (Morocco), Chill Out Festival (Istanbul), New Orleans(USA), Lenk (Switzerland), WOMAD Festival (UK), Twinwood Festival (UK), Guinness Jazz Festival (Ireland), Hamburg Lindy Exchange, Moods Jazz Club (Zurich), Moulin Rouge (Paris), White Mink (London), Royal Albert Hall (London), as well as playing dance events and parties in Germany, Italy, France, Holland, Monaco, Luxembourg, Belgium, Portugal and a plethora of other venues, festivals and private parties in cities around Europe. Brand sponsorships include Brooks Brothers, Courvoisier, Sipsmith Gin, Chopard and a variety of independent vintage brands.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever played at?

We were thrilled to play at the European premiere of the Jungle Book movie in London. The best venue we've played was the Splendido in Portofino, Italy - all the elegance of 1940s Italy in a stunning setting.

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

We adore the music of New Orleans throughout the ages - from Louis Armstrong to Cab Calloway to Nat King Cole. It's impossible to choose just one song - a catalogue of 100 years of stunning music!

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

We started giving up our day-jobs and busking in the streets of Brighton, UK. Very soon we started touring and becoming busier and have been full-time for nearly 15 years. So many wonderful memories and many more to make in the future. The music and smiles are never-ending.

What's your favourite type of event to play at?

We adore playing the music we love on a sunny afternoon in a beautiful outdoor setting, but equally, a small, intimate space where everyone is listening to every note is a joy!

What makes you different from all the other vintage swing bands?

Our male group vocals are unique. We're also not pretending to be something we're not - we love the music we play, and our individual styles and approach to music make for a unique listening experience.

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

We normally allow for 4 hours on-site from arrival to finish, and 90 minutes of music (usually 2x45mins). However, we can always discuss if other timings are needed. We usually allow 1 hour for setup but just for safety - normally much quicker.

Are you happy to perform outside?

Very happy to perform outside - we can be totally acoustic, semi-acoustic (using our battery setup) or with our PA.

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

We are happy to learn specific songs at an extra cost, otherwise, if you have a preference for a certain style from our current set list, we'll be happy to focus on that more in the performance. We adapt our set list during the performance based on how people are reacting, etc - this makes for the best overall energy for both the band and the guests.

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

Most people are charmed - we're authentic, we love what we do and that shines out of the music. Even people who don't like swing/jazz /vintage music will enjoy our performance just based on the feel of it.
