About / Biography

Hello!

Welcome to our page. We are a flexible string ensemble who play Classical music, traditional pieces from around the world, and jazz/pop charts, all with our unique arranging style. United by our training in Classical music, we come from all over the globe: Argentina, England, Finland, Scotland, and the USA. Each of us brings our background in folk and roots music to the band. Between the six of us, we play just about everything, from glam rock to Swedish polskas to Haydn, and unite the refinement of Classical playing with the passion and energy of folk music.

Why have The Tuning Forks play your event?

  1. Our genre flexibility means you don't need to hire or manage multiple bands: we can be your string quartet for a wedding ceremony and your ceilidh band for the reception afterwards!
  2. Our original arrangements will really elevate the musical experience of your guests! We don't just read through scores; we play with each other and spend hours crafting the perfect version of a piece, whether that's your favorite Michael Jackson tune or a jazz ballad
  3. We arrange on demand! If you have a piece you absolutely need to hear, we will make it happen! No request is too outrageous!
  4. Our ensemble size and makeup can be tailored to exactly what you need. Whether that's delicate harp and strings or a big band sound with electrified bass, we've got the gear and know-how to make it happen

Technical Info

What are your basic technical requirements?

As a sextet, we need a space that measures around 8m by 5m (smaller ensemble requests need less room!), an armless chair for the cellist, the mandolinist, and the harpist, and a stool for the bassist. We need a power source for our clarsach player's amp near the stage, as well as a plugin for a microphone for the mandolin. Otherwise, we can play completely acoustic if desired! If you would like us micced up, we need phantom power with one channel per person (can send a spec with details). We need storage space for instrument cases (cello, bass, and harp) and COMPLETE COVER from the elements if playing outside.

Do you provide sound and lighting equipment?

We can provide our own miccing equipment on request, but all need phantom power (DI and cable) except the harpist, who has her own amp and cables.

What information do you require about a venue?

We need directions for load-in, setup and information about elevators (we can do stairs, but with the large instruments it's lovely to know if there is an elevator we can use!).

Can you provide a Spotify/DJ service before and between your sets?

We are happy to provide a playlist between things if desired.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever played at?

We played the Fresh Ayr Folk Festival in the summer of 2025 at Ayr Town Hall. It was such a wonderful venue and it was so cool to have extensive lighting and effects in addition to the music we were playing.

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

We have a lot of influences as a band, ranging from ensembles such as Moishe's Bagel, and Lodestar Trio, and classical stars like Isabelle Faust and Yo-yo Ma, to people like David Bowie, Joni Mitchell, and Thelonious Monk. We also take a lot of inspiration from our roots; the people in our lives who taught us folk music growing up.

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

We came together as a band while studying music at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. We had all worked together in different bands or projects beforehand, and thought it would be a good idea to all get into a room and play some tunes. We had our first official gig in November 2025, and since then we've been putting our own shows and playing regularly at festivals and events in the UK.

What's your favourite type of event to play at?

We love any event where we see people coming together to celebrate each other and have a good time, or unite for a common cause. We have a soft spot for gay weddings; I'm always so moved by the love and commitment of the couple and all the people there for them on that big day. And we love the energy and celebration afterwards at the reception!

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

Without tech, we typically arrive 1-1.5 hours before the performance; with tech, we need 2 hours. We usually perform one or two 45-60 minute sets, with the minimum break in between sets being 15 minutes. We're happy to play slightly shorter or longer as suits your event!

Are you happy to perform outside?

We are! However, we need a flat, dry surface to play on, a power source for the clarsach player, and a tent/gazebo the size of the surface to ensure our instruments don't get damaged by sun or stray rain. If it is raining or very cold, we cannot play outside.

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

We take pride in being able to make custom arrangements and setlists for our clients! We will do our best to accomodate any requests, be that for specific tunes or just the general style or vibe. The exact amount of new tunes we can put in a set depends on the complexity of said pieces and the amount of advance time we have, we are always willing to discuss this directly with you. We are happy to provide a repertoire list or choose a set based off the type of music/event you'd like to have!

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

Talking to people after our performances, these are the main things I hear:

-Original: our style, choice of music, and stage presence is unique in a way that draws people in and leaves them with a lasting impression.

-Passionate: we love working with each other, and that really comes across when we're on stage; our personal connections make us a tight, flexible, captivating ensemble.

-Professional, but down to earth: We will show up on time and play an amazing set, but we will also look like we are having fun while doing it, and are comfortable speaking to an audience or mixing with guests.

-Flexible: We can go from jazz band to string orchestra and back again in record time! People who hear us play are always impressed with the breadth of our repertoire and how natural we sound playing many diffent genres.

-Just REALLY GOOD: from sound techs to fellow musicians and concert attendees, people are always impressed with the level of polish and technique we bring to folk music.
