Paul and Nicci's review of Jason (Guitarist)
Ideal for:
Jazz musicians, as a rule, suit formal events very well. Drinks receptions at weddings are a particular highlight, as their repertoire is very well suited to allowing and encouraging conversation between guests that might not know each other. If you're planning a formal dinner, or a small corporate event, then hiring a local jazz guitarist can be a excellent way to impress. Similarly, if you are having a vintage themed event, like a product launch or business opening, jazz music will compliment this perfectly.
When booking Guitarists (Jazz)
Jazz guitarists are absolute professionals, and will usually try and accommodate any requests you might have, but it's always best to try and be realistic with what you expect them to do. This also goes for set timings - it's unreasonable to expect a musician to play for hours and hours without a break of some kind, even if they are in the background. Typical performance time will be two sets of around 45 minutes, however this varies from musician to musician, and most will offer an alternative quote for longer set times.
Although smart-casual is usually the default dress code, if you want your act to dress a particular way, remember it's always better to ask in advance.
Prices for Guitarists (Jazz):
As a solo act, prices for jazz guitarists will usually start at a minimum of £150. Most will usually charge an additional supplement for travel, so if you're looking to keep the cost down, try using the 'advanced search' feature to find jazz guitarists near you.
About jazz guitarist's music:
The repertoire of jazz guitarists will vary from musician to musician. Most will have a decent selection of "standards" or "real book" tunes - these are popular jazz songs that are often rooted in traditional music, but also penned by people like Gershwin. They've become so established that you'll hear them covered by everyone, from Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock to Michael Buble and Jamie Cullum. That said, each musician will have a slightly different take on how these tunes go, based on their influences. Some jazz guitarists will incorporate elements of funk, world and classical music into their playing, so it is always important to listen to audio clips of your prospective act.
Some jazz guitar players will also cover some jazzier pop tunes, and are usually happy to take requests that aren't 'pure' jazz, especially when it comes to first dances or wedding ceremony music. When it comes to the style of playing, many jazz guitarists will either play acoustic guitar or electric, and this will define their sound. Some guitarists will also be accompanied by other musicians, whether this is another guitar player to "comp" (play the rhythm, while they play the melody) or a small jazz band with a drummer and double bass player. These are the bands that are more likely to play some fusion, and experiment with other styles.
