About / Biography

James is a singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Bathgate, in the heart of Scotland’s central belt. His 20 years in the music industry has seen him perform his catalogue of self-penned original songs, as well as an array of covers in bars, clubs and functions across the UK, including Oran Mor, Classic Grand & King Tuts as well as larger venues such as Glasgow’s Kelvin Hall and Royal Concert Hall. James also recently returned from a 6-week round trip of the USA in 2016, busking and gigging across New York, Hollywood, San Francisco, Chicago and Nashville amongst others.

In 2015, James worked with Grammy/Ivor Novello award-winning producer/songwriter Eliot Kennedy on writing and producing an E.P. for his band at the time and gained a valuable insight into the workings of professional composition, production and the music industry as a whole. The result earned the group airplay on XFM’s drive time show, as well as features in Kerrang, Classic Rock Magazine and The Scottish Sun.

Another service James is able to offer, is a bespoke songwriting service for any occasion. Just tell him the story and let him create a track for your special day. This can be recorded to a high standard and played on the day if required.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever played at?

My band Sianar fought off competition from over 1000 bands and won a slot on the main stage at Scotfest, held at the Royal Highland Showground in Edinburgh. We were chosen by Jermaine Jackson (The Jacksons) and Adele Lynch (Bewitched) and played to over 3000 people, sharing the stage with Boyzone, The Jacksons, 5ive, Bewitched and Les McKeown.

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

Where do I start. First memories of music are of dad playing Billy Joel's "Innocent Man" album. Then mum bought Queens "Innuendo' which kinda lit the fire. When I heard The Beatles my life changed forever. Now I'm a regular listener of the classics, Fleetwood Mac, Springsteen, Elton, Elvis, Eagles, to newer artists like Coldplay, Paolo Nutini, Taylor Swift, Oasis, One Republic, Sam Fender.

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

I started drumming in a band when I was about 15, which lasted till I was about 22. In this time I'd learned guitar and started songwriting, which I continued to develop after the band split. I initially started gigging my own songs at open mics, but started gigging covers when I got offered money to play my local bar. Since then I've played thousands of gigs all across the UK, and as far afield as NYC, Nashville and San Francisco. I also do music production for my own tracks, and for local artists.

What's your favourite type of event to play at?

I love playing all events. Doing the cocktail hour at weddings are the least pressure actually, (unless I know I'm singing a first dance, or singing a bride up the aisle). Weekend city centre pub gigs are fast paced and fun, but you've got to be on your A game, and restuarants have all the kids challenging you to play modern songs I've never heard. I guess garden parties in the sun are probably top of the list.

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

Set up time: 20 minutes

Are you happy to perform outside?

Yes, as long as I'm covered from the elements and it's not too cold.

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

Of course. I have a large setlist I can provide a client with, If you can let me know in advance I will arrange a tailored setlist for the occasion.

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

People always compliment me on the varied range of songs I do. Having played in hundreds of venues, from holiday parks, weddings, bars, and restaurants, to care homes and nurseries, I've had to learn a vast array of songs to keep up. Everything from ABBA to ACDC. Patsy Cline to Ed Sheeran. Johnny Cash to Jessie J.
