Below the Border are not registered for VAT ~ We are surprisingly cheap! Individually we’ve all had professional careers outside of the music business for decades. Now we do this for the love of the music and seeing audiences appreciate our playing. We don’t do it for the money and we prefer to work only once or twice a month at nice parties - hence our ridiculously low fee. So long as we come out ahead by sun up we’re happy. You can pay us anywhere you like - cash when we come off stage is normal - we’re very old school!

About / Biography

Ex-Pro Recording Artists from the 1970s
  • Now we play for fun - appearing at private parties performing the Chart Hits of the 60s & 70s.

  • Some of us appear on albums on original vinyl - yes, we really are that old!

  • Exceptional players with great harmony vocals” - your guests will have a night they’ll remember.

  • We always fill the dance floor - be it T. Rex, The Rolling Stones or David Bowie, we’re good enough to play it all note for note exactly like the record - we’re VERY experienced musicians.

ABOUT PRCES:

Our fees are remarkably low. We all left the music business professionally decades ago. We put this band together for the music - the joy of being back out on the road playing the soundtrack of a youth.

STOP PRESS:

We’ve just added a new backing / harmony singer. Like us Gail is from the 70s but she is from a famous musical family. Her cousin is Dave Stewart - The Eurythmics (but her biggest claim to fame is once making a cup of tea for Bob Dylan in Dave’s mum’s little house in Newcastle!)

Technical Info

What are your basic technical requirements?

One mains plug hole.

Do you provide sound and lighting equipment?

We have state-of-the-art equipment, vintage Gibson / Fender guitars, vintage Ludwig drums, and a 1000w Yamaha PA system with fold-back.

We do bring some lights from time to time but we find we don’t really need them to add to our performance.

What information do you require about a venue?

Where it is and what time you want us on.

If you book Below the Border for your party, the band will be the last thing you’ll need to worry about.

Can you provide a Spotify/DJ service before and between your sets?

We can provide music for you before we go on, during our break and afterwards. Or you can plug your playlist into our PA system.

We also have a great support act that you can book separately through us for £50 - if you want.

He’s an old friend called Dave Bridges. He plays good acoustic guitar and sings sweetly performing Laurel Canyon gear from our era ….Joni, Graham Nash, Neil Young, Gordon Lightfoot, Bayez, David Crosbie, Fairport, Dylan, etc.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever played at?

Town Halls, Universities, big-stage Festivals, iconic rock venues across Europe - see a list of examples later in these FAQs.

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

Most influenced by . . . Beethoven.

Favourites: well this band is about us playing cover of our favourite artists (see set list) - The Who, The Stones, The Beatles, David Bowie, Status Quo, Free, Jimi, Deep Purple , T-Rex, Slade, Badfinger, Bad Company, The Hollies, Rod Stewart and the Faces, Thin Lizzy, Steve Miller, Jimi and many more

Greatest party dance-song of all time? Twist & Shout? Alright Now? . . . We know how to pick dance floor fillers.

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

Two of us started gigging when we were 14. When we were 16 we joined a very special band in Birmingham (Spellbound) and our second ever gig was supporting Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames! That was in 1975.

As for our gigging experience since ….. everything from tiny gigs to music pubs to town halls, universities, big stage festivals, touring abroad, etc.

What's your favourite type of event to play at?

These days our favourite bookings are appearing at small private parties, celebrations in village halls, summer garden parties, beer festivals at bucolic pubs, weddings. etc.

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

We don’t set performance times. You’re the customer. You tell us performance times! We’re very easy going.

Most clients want two sets of between 45 minutes in an hour each; but we are flexible.

Are you happy to perform outside?

Yes we get a lot of gigs playing at people’s garden parties in the summer. We’ve played weddings in the grounds of Jacobean mansion houses and parties in tiny back gardens (which tend to be more fun!). Last year we were directed to a random field on the South Downs to play at a Travellers wedding - lovely gig!

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

We will learn your favourite song for you if it fits. We can learn anything and make it sound exactly the same as the original.

E.g: We did the Christmas party for His Majesty’s Royal Artillery in 2022 and they wanted Slade’s “Well here it is Merry Christmas”. We loved learning it and have kept in the set for Christmas time.

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

What folk say most is how much we sound like all the different artists we cover. We get lovely compliments everywhere we go and we love that.

A taste taken from a few our many reviews:-

“They had us all transfixed and dancing within seconds. Their good humour, enthusiasm and pure musicianship, made everyone watching feel like Glastonbury veterans by the end of the performance. I cannot recommend them highly enough.”

“Outstanding players with great harmony vocals”

“What a band! Five absolutely fantastic musicians playing music that we all know and love. Right from the very beginning people were up and dancing right up to the last encore.”

“Fab song choices. Incredible musicians”

“Really friendly guys, who played all the classics, and even welcomed my dad up to play the drums. Everyone had a fab night and would definitely book them again”

“ …. they were brilliant musicians one and all and kept everyone dancing until well after midnight. We were AMAZED at how much we paid”
