Bryce McCulloch is an experienced Scottish Highland bagpiper based in Maybole, Ayrshire, who has dedicated much of his life to playing and promoting Scotland's traditional music and piping heritage.
With around 40 years of piping experience, Bryce has established himself as a professional solo piper, specialising in weddings, funerals, Burns Suppers, corporate functions and special events.
He began his piping journey after receiving a practice chanter as a Christmas present from his brother, Gordon. Having developed his skills through Maybole Pipe Band, he went on to build a successful solo piping career.
Bryce has held prestigious roles as resident wedding piper at Culzean Castle and resident event piper at Trump Turnberry Resort. He has also performed at more than 2,000 weddings, both throughout Scotland and internationally.
Known for his traditional Scottish appearance, Bryce takes pride in wearing a full military-style piping uniform, complete with his Modern Red McPherson tartan, feather bonnet and red hackle.
He plays both the Great Highland Bagpipes, renowned for their powerful and stirring sound, and the Scottish Small Pipes, which offer a softer, mellower sound particularly suited to small indoor occasions.
What makes Bryce stand out is his combination of experience, professionalism and passion for Scottish tradition. He aims to provide more than just music; he creates an authentic Scottish atmosphere and helps make important occasions memorable.

Some of the most rewarding performances I have had have been at private family occasions, including weddings, funerals and other special celebrations. These are always particularly meaningful to me, as I feel my playing adds something special to the occasion and helps create memories that people can cherish. Whether contributing to a joyful celebration or providing a fitting musical tribute at a more emotional time, I take great pride in knowing that my music has real value to those attending.
I also particularly enjoy performing away from Scotland, as it gives me the opportunity to share a little piece of my homeland with others. I love talking about Scottish traditions, explaining the history and meaning behind the music, and demonstrating our unique musical heritage through my playing. For me, these performances are about more than just the music; they are about sharing my culture, connecting with people and giving them an experience they might not otherwise have had.
I have been mostly influenced by traditional Scottish music not just great pipers, musicians who have helped preserve and develop our musical heritage. I do have a particular admiration for pipers who can combine excellent technique with feeling, expression and a real understanding of the music. I also take inspiration from listening to different styles of piping, as I believe there is always something new to learn.
Choosing one favourite artist is difficult, but I have a great appreciation for the likes of Gordon Duncan, whose creativity and contribution to Scottish piping have been hugely influential.
As for the greatest song of all time, I think it would have to be Highland Cathedral. It is a beautiful and powerful piece that has the ability to move people, whether played at a celebration, a wedding or a more solemn occasion. For me, that is what great music is all about – creating an emotion and leaving people with a lasting memory.
My piping journey began in my early twenties, having previously enjoyed violin lessons at school. When I was considering taking up the violin again, my brother Gordon bought me a practice chanter for Christmas, and I was instantly hooked! I spent hours practising before eventually joining my local Band. After around five years gaining experience and confidence, I began performing as a solo piper.
My first major opportunity came when I was offered the position of resident wedding piper at Culzean Castle, which marked the beginning of my professional career. Since then, I have performed at well over 2,000 weddings, along with funerals, corporate events, Burns Suppers and private functions. I have also had the privilege of performing internationally and at prestigious venues, including Trump Turnberry.
After around 40 years of playing, I still love what I do. Every occasion is different, and I take great pride in providing music that makes people's special moments even more memorable.
I genuinely enjoy all types of events, as each one brings something different. I love getting dressed up in my kilt and going out as a representative of Scottish tradition and culture. Whether it's a wedding, a family celebration, a corporate event or something more solemn, I enjoy being part of people's special moments. One of the things I love most about my job is that every booking brings new people to meet, new stories to hear and someone different to play for. I take great pride in sharing a little piece of Scotland wherever my pipes take me.
I like to arrive one hour early. Performance is the clients requirements.
I mainly play for outdoor events but I will play inside for high impactful occasions. This also depends on the size of the venue being used.
Clients are welcome to request music choices but due to the vagueness of tune names then I am more than happy play appropriate music for the occasion.
I think my clients would describe me as professional, reliable, friendly and approachable, with a genuine passion for what I do. Many comment on the quality of my playing, my appearance in full Highland dress and the atmosphere I bring to their occasion. I am often told that I go above and beyond to accommodate special requests, whether that means learning a particular tune or helping plan the music for an important moment. Above all, I hope people see me as someone who genuinely cares about making their occasion special. I want every client to feel that they have received a personal service, not just booked a piper.
My clients are private and stay that way.
I have performed at over 800 venues.
