About / Biography

The Cuban Guitarist is one of the finest performers of the Cuban Classical Guitar School. He is a sophisticated virtuoso on his instrument and an ambassador of Cuban culture. Born in Havana, Dickinson Cardenas graduated from the Superior Institute of Art (ISA Havana) in Guitar with a first-class honours degree. In Cuba, he took part in masterclasses with Leo Brouwer, John Williams, Costas Cotsiolis, and Eduardo Martín.

Since graduating from Guildhall School of Music Ahmed has enjoyed a busy career as a solo artist, a collaborative performer and a producer and has also been instrumental in introducing UK audiences to works by contemporary Cuban composers such as Yalil Guerra, Eduardo Martín, Jose Antonio Rojas and Manuel Molina.

He has performed in prestigious venues including the Karl Marx Theatre (Cuba), Royal Albert Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Purcell Room, Wigmore Hall, Royal Opera House and The Philharmonic Hall (Belarus)

Ahmed is a Concordia Foundation Ambassador and a Classical Guitar Lecturer at London College of Music.

Recent engagements include performances in Azerbaijan, Malta, Cuba, Poland, France, Germany, the UK, and Spain tours with Grammy nominee guitarist and composer Eduardo Martín in 2014-15 and 2016, and also the world premiere of his double concerto (Mestizo), recitals for the International Guitar Foundation and live performances at the Royal Opera House in collaboration with ballet star Carlos Acosta.

What are your typical setup and performance times?

I normally arrive 1 hours before the performance to set up, with a performance of 2 x 45 minutes or 2 x 60 minute sets. More than happy to play a bit longer or shorter.


Are you happy to perform outside?

I am happy to play outside but in the shade, a flat level surface and a power supply close to the performance area."
