Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever played at?

In recent years I have given masterclasses on guitar at the the UK Guitar Show at Earls Court in London. Also various Edinburgh Festival shows.

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

Django Reinhardt, Runrig and Rory Gallagher. Quite eclectic!

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

I am a a very experienced guitarist having played for several decades. I have been a principle guitar teacher at adult classes and have written a published book on playing Scottish guitar styles which also received a grant from Creative Scotland. I have produced a well received CD album of Scottish traditional instrumental tunes on the acoustic guitar and which received considerable radio play.
I also play gypsy jazz guitar based on Django Reinhardt's playing. Quite a lot of this can involve slower pieces ( as opposed to swing) and almost bordering on classical or Spanish type styles. I use a gypsy Maccaferri style guitar for this.
I also sing - Scottish folk songs, blues, Bob Dylan, Rory Gallagher and Richard Thompson styles and some classic jazz, pop/ rock etc.
I can also provide a top fiddle player for Scottish/ Irish / folk music. Also for a gypsy jazz set I can provide another excellent guitarist. The rates for this would be to be arranged.

What's your favourite type of event to play at?

I am happy to be playing in the background on unamplified or amplified acoustic guitar. Also to sing a selection of songs.
