About / Biography

Playing an original whirlwind style of highly visceral, passionately charged percussive flamenco/funk fusion, Leo’s style melds his appreciation for a spectrum of rhythmic musical styles into captivating performances on a single acoustic guitar that sounds like an entire band.

Commonly described as ‘James Brown meets Rodrigo y Gabriela on an acoustic guitar’, his performances combine the athletic skill of percussive techniques with emotive, highly dynamic and groove-based playing – creating a visually enthralling element alongside an atmosphere that gets people moving and pushes an audience’s expectation of what an acoustic guitar can do.

Playing since 13 and with international performances from Lisbon to London, Istanbul to Dublin and Lake Konstanz to Edinburgh, ranging from chic hotel bars, street festivals, large scale corporate events, rowdy European bars, and Victorian stately homes, Leo performs to all crowds with an equal amount of passion and flare. Recently featured in 2016 on British TV and performing in the same year to the likes of George Benson, he makes a name for himself in any town he visits and will leave audiences astounded.

He has recently been featured performing on primetime BBC1 show The One Show in October 2017 and also BBC1 show Inside Out, featured performing as well in November 2017 and has also had the honour of performing in Jimi Hendrix's apartment in Mayfair in early 2018 (Handel & Hendrix Museum).

'...when he finally hit the strings, it was like a bolt of electricity! My God, can this guy play the guitar! And I MEAN can this guy play the guitar! Every square millimetre of it — even the bits you’d never imagine you COULD play! And the energy and vitality of his performance and stage-presence blew me away.'

'Anyone who’s seen the Netflix masterpiece “The OA,” and the scene in which Hap meets the guitarist Renata in Cuba, will know what I mean when I say there’s something about the guitar that goes to the very core of our being. A guitar can “say” things no other instrument can say — not even the human voice. The guitar is notoriously difficult to really master. You don’t have a direct sight-line to your fingers — either those on the fret board or those strumming across the hole that allows the resonating sound to be projected. You could angle the instrument towards you to get a better view, but it’s not actually designed to be played like that, and those who do look pretty pathetic. So playing the guitar is a sensory experience — it’s all about the sense of touch, and the extent to which you feel able to trust that sense without needing the reassurance of a sight-line. So the best guitarists tend to be those who are the most intuitive, which means that as a general rule, they are also spectacular musicians. And Joncan was all the above, and more. I’d even go so far as to say that for me, his was the standout performance of the night, simply because I’d never EVER seen anyone play a guitar so imaginatively, with such gusto, and not miss a single note. I guarantee you!'

Technical Info

What are your basic technical requirements?

• One power socket ideally within 3 meters of performing space.
• Can provide battery powered amplifier if playing outdoors.
• One low stool or armless chair for performing on.
• Safe storage space for gear and space on stage for backup guitar. (Leo always brings 2 guitars to any performance.)

Do you provide sound and lighting equipment?

I provide high quality Bose amplification suitable for up to 250 people, or mains-free mobile amplification systems when power is not available.

What information do you require about a venue?

Location, venue room size, power sockets, ideal placement of me within the space for setup

Can you provide a Spotify/DJ service before and between your sets?

Yes

Do you bring all amplification?

I bring high quality Bose amplification suitable for up to around 250 people as standard, or mains-free battery systems for outdoor performances suitable for up to around 150 people, in a background music role. If you need a louder system or my role in the event is more 'main event' and your audience is large, I can hire in extra systems at cost - or liaise with any sound technicians/audio experts you might already have by that stage.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever played at?

Best gig - an incredible medieval castle top in the Dolomite Mountains in Italy in 2023. There's a beautiful video of it shot by drone, the special couple arrived by Helicopter, and

Best Venue - Jimi Hendrix's former bedroom in Mayfair, London. This was the apartment he was living in while in London I performed sitting on his bed. The entire apartment has an incredible aura to it and is now a museum dedicated to him and his music.

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

I have been most influenced by:
Santana (it is because of him that I picked up the guitar)
Rodrigo y Gabriela
Raul Midon
David Gilmour/Pink Floyd
James Brown
Stevie Ray Vaughan

The greatest song of all time changes for me day to day, but as I type this I'm currently waiting to board a plane to Lima, Peru and in my current mood the greatest song is Sting's 'Shape Of My Heart'.

The virtuoso-crafted lyrics speak of contrasts and metaphors for a master player of cards and the grandiose relations to each of the cards that make the hairs on my arms raise; something indicating both addiction, mastery, great skill and colourful portrayals. The lyrics carry a solemn weight baring something heavier than their words and meanings when combined with the melody.

The muted, understated guitar part is pure excellence - not overplayed, simply perfectly composed. I am happily waiting to board this plane guitar case in hand listening to the track now!

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

I have been performing for more than 10 years and have played for the biggest companies in the world including Apple, Google, the BBC, Yamaha, Deloitte, and SAP. Ive also had the honour of playing for George Benson and in Jimi Hendrix's former bedroom as mentioned, which was an absolute delight having grown up to his music.

I started gigging playing the style you see me perform now from playing on the street. I've been a street performer across most of the EU and in Turkey, and it was from these experiences that I both became the kind of performer I am and learnt how to truly entertain a crowd.

Nowadays, I play for luxury events, incredible venues and in some of the most truly beautiful settings in the world - and I gained the skills from the purity of street performance.

What's your favourite type of event to play at?

I love intimate, secret, unique venues and settings where I can completely hold the audience's attention and have the space to absolutely own the instrument on stage.

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

Set up: It will take 10 minutes to setup and warm up from arrival if playing acoustic, 30 minutes if through amplifier or 40 hour if through a PA with or without sound technician.
Pack down: 5 minutes if playing acoustic, 15 minutes if through amplifier, 15 minutes if through PA.
Midnight finish is fine if around London, otherwise depends on travel/accommodation arrangements.

Are you happy to perform outside?

Of course! As long as there is rain cover or a plan agreed for my equipment to be safe before it rains in place before it happens, especially in the UK.

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

I can learn some specific songs for sure, however, clients usually hire me to 'do my thing' and play my own flamenco-funk fusion pieces since it's such a niche and, frankly, very few guitarists can play this style not least with the energy I give!

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

Captivating, unreal, energetic, virtuoso, energy, standout, 'blew everyone away', 'no one expected anything more than just a guitar', 'how does he do it', stunning, 'made the night'
