About / Biography

The Funky Orleans bring the funky, soulful sounds of New Orleans to your event. From an intimate duo to a full 5-piece band, the lineup can be tailored to suit everything from a private gathering to a large party or corporate event.

Led by drummer and vocalist Roy Pfeffer, founder and leader of The Big Smoke Family, The Funky Orleans draws on the deep traditions of New Orleans funk, soul and Mardi Gras music. Roy has spent time with Mardi Gras Indians in New Orleans, played alongside members of the Rebirth Brass Band and performed on the Congo Square stage at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, bringing genuine first-hand knowledge of the city's distinctive rhythms, grooves and musical traditions.

The musicians behind The Funky Orleans have performed at festivals including London Jazz Festival, Rye Jazz Festival, Sidmouth Folk Festival and Upton Blues Festival, as well as regularly playing at leading London venues including Ronnie Scott's, PizzaExpress Jazz Club, Nightjar and Oriole.

Expect tight rhythms, warm vocals and infectious New Orleans grooves, with the experience and musicality to create the right atmosphere, whether it's a laid-back drinks reception or a full-on party.

Technical Info

What are your basic technical requirements?

Standard power supply close to the performance area and a playing area of at least 70 sq ft (6.5 sq m).

Do you provide sound and lighting equipment?

We bring our own amplification system suitable for most event spaces. We don't provide lighting but are happy to work with whatever the venue has in place.

What information do you require about a venue?

We just need to know the size of the space, access arrangements for load-in, and whether there is a power supply available nearby. We arrive 30 minutes before the event to set up.

Can you provide a Spotify/DJ service before and between your sets?

We can provide a background playlist between sets for smaller spaces, though for larger venues a dedicated PA system would be needed to cover the room effectively.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever played at?

Our best gig to date was playing at Jazz Fest in New Orleans, right at the heart of where this music was born.

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

We draw on the tradition of the Mardi Gras Indians, The Meters, Dr John and Professor Longhair. Picking a single favourite artist or song is impossible, but Dr John's mix of groove, mystery and soul sums up what we're going for.

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

The band started at Charlie Wright's in Old Street back in 2010, and since then we've played all over the world for thousands of people.

What's your favourite type of event to play at?

We love any event where we can get people tapping, dancing and grooving along with us.

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

We take roughly 30 minutes to set up. Typical set lengths are 2 x 45 minutes or 2 x 60 minutes, though we're happy to tailor this to suit the event.

Are you happy to perform outside?

Yes, we're happy to play outside as long as there is suitable cover and weather protection for the instruments and equipment.

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

Clients are welcome to request a few specific songs, and we're also happy to take a brief on the general vibe they're after. We'll build the set around that.

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

Clients consistently tell us we brought real energy and got everyone up and dancing, and that it felt like a genuine party rather than background music.
