About / Biography

I believe I was a born musician!
It's something that I have always been into, from a very early age.
The first instrument I learned was the recorder at school, but I actually took it seriously and quickly learned to read music and play quite well on the descant, treble and tenor recorders.
At secondary school I started with the clarinet and worked my way through the grades to grade 6, along with singing. At that time, the saxophone was just a second instrument and I took it up again seriously into adulthood, by attending music college in Leeds.
My main instrument now is the tenor saxophone for which I play straight ahead jazz, but I also play the alto and soprano, mainly for funk and soul and acoustic gigs. At college I also studied the flute as a subsidiary instrument and took piano lessons.
In 2010 I took up playing the trombone snd subsequently the sousaphone as I enjoy listening to and playing reggae, ska and New Orleans style jazz. It was initially a bit of fun but I worked my way through the jazz grades on the trombone and then took that seriously too!
I have also run and managed my own bands, which I still do: Brassbound, a funky, jazzy brass and wind street band; Silverrock, a reggae band and The Funk N Disorderleez, a funk, soul and disco band.
I do lots of session work and recordings and really enjoy writing horn lines for songs. But my first love is playing live and at the moment, as well as playing with bands, I do quite a few solo performances to backing tracks or alongside a DJ or percussionist.
You will always get a professional and lively performance from me, a friendly smile and plenty of engagement with the audience!
Choose me for your special occasion and I will deliver a performance to remember!

What are your basic technical requirements?

Would need an electrical socket if full PA is required and a canopy of playing outside in case of rain

Do you provide sound and lighting equipment?

I provide sound where required but can also plug into a DJ's pa

What information do you require about a venue?

1. Is there a noise limiter at the venue?
2. Does the venue require PAT and PLI certificates? (I can supply these)
3. Does the venue have permission/a licence for live music if playing outside?
4. Is there easy access/parking on or near the venue?
5. Is paid parking required?

Can you provide a Spotify/DJ service before and between your sets?

Yes, I am happy to play music from Spotify before, after and between our sets. We’re happy to choose the music ourselves or let the client choose the music."

Do I provide a pa?

I have pa equipment for a small to medium room or outside area.
I can supply a full pa for a much larger area but this will cost extra, in negotiation with the client.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever played at?

As a performer, I have performed at the London Jazz Festival at the Southbank Centre and the Royal Albert Hall and as a teacher/band leader, I have led a group at the London Olympic Bid in Wembley.

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

I am influenced by all musicians but am especially moved by the songs of Stevie Wonder, Bob Marley and Dennis Brown. As a saxophonist, I enjoy listening to John Coltrane, Gary Bartz, Dexter Gordon, Sonny Rollins and many others.
For smooth jazz, I enjoy Gerald Albright.

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

I started gigging whilst at music college and everything developed from there. Since since then I have performed at hundreds of weddings, parties and events across the UK.

What's your favourite type of event to play at?

I love playing at all sorts of events but weddings receptions are my favourite! The guests are always in a good mood!

Do I take requests on the night?

If I know the song and I have the backing track then yes.
On a few occasions, I have playing to a karaoke track from YouTube and am happy to do this if it is possible.

Do I allow people to sing or play with me on the night without prior rehearsal?

I take my instructions from the hiring client only.
But in general I do not do this.

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

As a soloist, I mainly arrive 30-40 minutes before performance time to set up, unless the client requires me to arrive much earlier.

Are you happy to perform outside?

I am happy to play outside but I ask for shade and protection from rain, a flat level surface and a power supply close to the performance area if needed

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

I can learn specific songs before the event if given sufficient notice. The clients are welcome to pick amusic from my repertoire or let me choose the music for them. Most clients provide me with their preferred genre(s) of music with some additional songs they would like me to play.

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

I have been blessed with some wonderful feedback to my performances - the general comments when playing background music are that I play the style of music that they like, am very soulful, am punctual and well organised. For party songs, I have been told that I have a great song selection, and am very good at improvising with DJs

How long do I take a break for in between sets?

I tend to perform most within a two hour period and I supply continuous music throughout. I tend to take a break by not playing over a couple of songs, rather than go away for 15-20 minutes.
