About / Biography

Whether it’s a particular piece to walk down the aisle to, or beautiful background music for the drinks reception, I can provide the perfect musical accompaniment to your day. I have a large repertoire of classic & modern pop songs, all played in a folky acoustic style, along with many classical, jazz and folk pieces. I can prepare & learn special pieces for your day & tailor the music to complement the ceremony perfectly.

My approach to providing music for weddings is to bring the heart and soul of the song to the fore.

Fingerstyle guitar playing is a highly skilled way to incorporate the melody, rhythm and chords of the song into a solo instrumental performance, without the need for any backing tracks or loop pedals at all.

I pride myself on taking each song and arranging it in a way that captures the essence of the original but makes it suitable for the wedding setting, so feel free to request songs in any genre and I can create a beautiful folky arrangement.

My playing style is influenced by folk guitar greats such as Nick Drake and Bert Jansch, and I bring this musicianship and ability into my wedding performances.

It is a privilege to be asked to provide music for a couples special day, and I care deeply about getting every detail right, and creating the perfect atmosphere for different parts of the day.

I have provided music for over 100 weddings and events, including some of the most high-end wedding venues in South Wales and The South West of England.

I can play in large and small spaces, indoor & outdoor, and have high quality battery powered amplification, so it’s easy to set up anywhere, without the need for power outlets or extensions. If you have a friend or relative that you would like to sing as you walk down the aisle I will happily accompany them on guitar, and provide a microphone and amplification for them to use.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever played at?

The best gig I've ever played was at the Roundhouse in London in the band Fictonian - what an amazing venue! Some high end wedding venues I've enjoyed playing at are Plas Dinam, Dewsall Court and Huntsham Court.

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

My guitar playing is very influenced by Nick Drake, Bert Jansch and John Martyn. If I had to say my all time favourite song it would be Both Sides Now by Joni Mitchell.

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

I've been gigging since I was 14, have since toured the UK as a solo artist and in a duo with the folk guitarist Henry Parker. I have released 5 albums of original music which have had radio play from Mark Radcliffe on BBC Radio 2 and from Cerys Matthews and Guy Garvey on 6 Music, and received excellent reviews. davidianroberts.com

What's your favourite type of event to play at?

I really enjoy weddings. It's a privilege to be a part of a couples special day.

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

I arrive 1 hour before I'm due to start playing. Check in with the coordinator about where to set up and usually have a quick chat with the celebrant to discuss any cues to look out for so that we can get the timings just right. I then will usually perform 20 minutes of background music as guests are taking their seats for the ceremony. I play for the bride's entrance, some background music during the signing of the register, and then a piece for as the couple leave the ceremony. Then I usually relocate and play for 90 minutes during the drinks reception.

Are you happy to perform outside?

Yes I'm happy to play outside but if there is much chance of rain then cover must be provided by the venue/ or somewhere I can duck inside and play from. I use a battery amplifier so there's no need to run extensions from anywhere.

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

Yes I am always happy for clients to request 2 new pieces for me to learn. I can provide recordings of these for the couple to approve before the day, and I can make any changes to tempo/feel as needed.

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

Previous clients have described my performances as "breathtaking, extraordinary, magical, warm and elegant, professional, relaxed, lovely, absolutely perfect".
