Technical Info

What are your basic technical requirements?

1off - 13Amp socket, one normal dining chair without arms and 3 parking spaces - happy to move the van to a suitable space after unloading.

Do you provide sound and lighting equipment?

Yes, we’re completely self contained. We bring our own PA system to all of our gigs as well as a versatile lighting rig to suit the venue. We can adjust the lighting if required for any guests that may have sensitivity to flashing lights.

What information do you require about a venue?

We already know most venues in the North East very well but we need a good postcode and instructions to find any Marquee or Tipi.

Can you provide a Spotify/DJ service before and between your sets?

Yes, DJ is available and we encourage a Spotify list simply to create a playlist (it's against Terms of Usage for a DJ to use Spotify but we have a Pro DJ download server). We then create that same list using mp3s with our software "Virtual DJ". We're very happy to pop on a playlist before, after or during an interval and we have a wide selection of standard playlists available. Of course the Client may choose their own Playlist and 1st Dance or we can simply start the Ceilidh as the 1st dance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever played at?

There have been so many great Ceilidhs all over from huge venues to tiny village halls... but it's the people that make it special.

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

Stéphane Grappelli, Stevie Wonder, Louis Armstrong, Queen, David Bowie, Rachmaninov, Shostakovich and Elgar.
Dr John's version of the old standard "It Don't Mean a Thing" always makes me smile.
The Proclaimers - "I'm Gonna Be" or Mark Ronson - "Uptown Funk" ft. Bruno Mars are both great party starters.
If a couple select Runrig - "Loch Lomond" as the last dance, I know it's going to be a great Ceilidh!

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

Gordon (the caller) started Ceilidh dancing in Scotland at Primary and then joined the Ceilidh band during Secondary School and has been leading Ceilidh bands in Scotland since 1984. He then moved to the North East of England in 1998 and continued Ceilidhs in Scotland for a few years as well as starting to build a band and advertise locally.

What's your favourite type of event to play at?

We love playing at all sorts of events but weddings are special - the guests are always happy and it's an absolute honour to be part of. Student Ceilidhs on the other hand can be a bit manic and 100 miles an hour all night but SO much fun!

What is the lineup for your band?

We have a violinist (with a pickup) taking the lead with our caller also playing keyboards and drum kit. All members of the band can assist with the teaching of the steps as we all walk through each dance.

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

Setup: 1 hour before the event starting
Pack down: 30 minutes

Are you happy to perform outside?

We use mains electricity so need to have cover in the form of a Gazebo or Marquee. Ceilidh dancing is far safer indoors! We don't want any accidents due to uneven or slippery ground.

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

Clients can choose their own playlist for DJ bit after the Ceilidh Band. We go with the flow as to what people like to dance to as the night progresses.

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

Messages received from clients thank us for being patient in teaching the Ceilidh dances and encouraging everyone to join in and get involved regardless of whether they had been to a Ceilidh before.

What would you recommend as a good time plan for the Ceilidh?

If evening guests are due to arrive around 7:30... we would often start the Ceilidh straight after the 1st dance around 8pm for around 90 minutes (up till the interval/buffet), then either change to DJ or another Ceilidh set up till 11pm then finish off with DJ till 12.

Can we adjust the time to change over to DJ after the Ceilidh?

We run both the band and DJ with the same sound and lights system and our caller is also the DJ after the band finish so we will be entirely flexible on the night (up till 11pm) and will play for as long as works for the dancers. We can change over to DJ anytime at a moments notice.
