Thanks to its versatility, Jazz can work wonderfully at almost every event. Whether you’re after a big band to dance to, or some cocktail piano to add to the atmosphere, there are so many variations of Jazz bands that you’re bound to find one that’s perfect for your function.
What do they play?
There are so many different sub-genres of Jazz it would be impossible to list them all. From Big Band Swing to Be-Bop and Fusion to Trad, most Jazz bands will cover a variety of different material within the genre, in order to be as versatile as possible. For example, a cocktail pianist can play a variation of popular Jazz standards as well as more popular contemporary songs. Groups of Jazz musicians can create a sophisticated atmosphere, which will add a real sense of occasion to your event, as well being able to play more up-tempo numbers to get people up and dancing.
For those organising a wedding, it would be wise to book Jazz musicians performing classic songs that will be well known by the guests. Popular Jazz standards such as Fly Me to the Moon, Autumn Leaves and Come Fly with Me are likely to be well received at a wedding, as well as a few of the jazzier popular numbers by the likes of Norah Jones and Jamie Cullum. Things to consider before booking
Consider your venue space
When booking a Jazz band it’s vital that you consider where you will be getting the musicians to play. Countless times bands have been booked only to find that they are unable to perform effectively when they arrive, as the space is far too small. This can also be due to a lack of power sources, sound limiters or other venue restrictions. It’s also important to consider the acoustics of the space where you want the musicians to play; a solo Jazz guitarist for example may be drowned out in a room of 100 people and would therefore need to be amplified.
For those booking a Jazz swing band, which can consist of over 10 members, a large stage will be needed. Jazz swing bands work particularly well for celebratory corporate events and regularly appear at large events such as Racecourses, renowned for their huge sound, incredible atmosphere and visual impact.
Vocals or instrumental?
Many Jazz acts will offer both instrumental sets, or to perform with a singer. This could be an existing member of the band, or an another member, available at an additional cost.
As a rule, if you are looking to have your music more in the background of your event, then instrumental music will probably suit better. Conversely, if you are looking to make the live music more of a feature, adding a singer to the mix is more likely to make people sit up and take note.
Things to think about during the booking process
How long you do you want musicians to play for?
If you’re to hire a wedding jazz band, you may want them to play at various different times throughout your special day and possibly even during the breakfast the day after. If this is the case, you’ll need to make the musicians aware of this before the day of the gig.
Most musicians will have already offered a set amount of performance time in their quote (3 x 45 minutes sets, for example) but it’s important not to just assume that your band will be available to you from the word go. Setting an arrival time and some rough set times should avoid most potential problems.
This also gives musicians the opportunity to consider how much material they will need and when they will receive breaks in their set. Your contact in the band should be able to answer any questions you might have.
Know the band’s requirements
It’s also extremely important that you discuss the bands’ technical requirements before the event. Many bands require a dressing room to store valuables and change into suitable clothes for the event. It’s also crucial that you are aware of how long a Jazz band may take to set up and pack away.
Some Jazz bands will be able to perform acoustically, but if they require amplification, it’s important to ensure that your band’s equipment is PAT tested for electrical safety, as your venue will usually require this. They may also ask for a Public Liability Insurance certificate (PLI), so it’s important your band has this.
