About / Biography

Murphy's Lore Ceilidh is based in Dorset, a 4 piece ceilidh band with a caller and their sister act Murphy's Lore Trio for any other excuse to enjoy some folk/roots music.

The ceilidh band consists of Accordion / Vox, Fiddle, Guitar / Mandolin / Stomp and our caller, who is also a fantastic vocalist, whistle and bodhran player.
We're well known in East Dorset / West Hampshire and are perfect for weddings, anniversaries, birthday do's and fundraising events where you'd like to get people properly mixed and mingling.

We're probably East Dorset's busiest ceilidh bands and have been around a looong time..loads of experience and easy to work with. Happy to travel around all of Dorset and parts of Hampshire and Wiltshire generally. Other areas may be considered within reason and budget/flexibility and timings.

We do occasionally use 'dep' musicians, but this is rarely and only if one member is away. If we cannot fulfill the booking, we do not act as agents or send another act in our place under our name - we will simply point you in the direction of someone else.

Our Trio consists of Fiddle / Vox, Whistles / Bodhran / Vox and Guitar / Tenor Guitar / Mandolin / Stomp - We perform traditional folk music from around the British Isles with attitude but without being folk / rock. With one male and one female lead vocals, we offer a great range of folk songs with great harmonies and a range of great tunes led by our fiddle player Steve.

Formed in 2019 for a one-off St. Patrick's night! Still going. Pub gigs, birthday dos, festivals, anywhere you'd like a bit of folk songs and tunes presented with ooomph. We've been lucky enough to perform at most local folk festivals, including twice opening Purbeck Valley Folk Festival and we're due to open Wimborne Festival in June 2025 in the first main concert of the weekend.

We currently have limited availability this year up to November but plenty for next year- you can check our calendar on this site or on our dates page on our website.

Technical Info

What are your basic technical requirements?

Performance space- stage is always helpful as it's safer. 8 x 4 meters is good. Two sockets x 13 amp . generally one parking space, sometimes two.

Do you provide sound and lighting equipment?

yes. Yamaha powered mixer/ amp 16 channel and 2 x Yamaha S115V's - these will cope with small to medium events spaces easily. We also have a small lighting set up.

What information do you require about a venue?

For a ceilidh/ barn dance is it big enough- space to dance is key. A stage or stage blocks would be useful.

Can you provide a Spotify/DJ service before and between your sets?

Yes, we can download playlists and use them during a break.

Do we have public liability?

Yes and PAT tested gear where appropriate. We can also supply a risk assessment document for ceilidhs/ barn dances.
They involve a lot of movement and are very energetic!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever played at?

Best ceilidhs have probably been our local folk festival at Wimborne and for the Trio along with great fundraising events over many years. For Trio, we once supported a major touring Folk/Rock act at Bridport Electric Palace as well as opening ( twice to date) Purbeck Valley Folk Festival.

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

many artistes from the folk world have influenced us and even our local acts continue to inspire us.

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

over 25 years in the ceilidh band alone.. all met the local folk scene in Dorset.

What's your favourite type of event to play at?

All events really , anywhere where they're just willing to join in.

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

Ceilidh - Approx one hour set up. up to 2 and half hours max plus a break.
Trio - one hour set up , and two sets of approx an hour or one long set- longer sets can be discussed if needed.

Are you happy to perform outside?

yes, as long as cover is provided .

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

As it is generally trad folk, we stick to our preferred sets.
