About / Biography

Singer/guitarist Rob Quo is accompanied by a rotating cast of musicians including Piano/Keyboards, Bass and Strings. With some musical partnerships lasting nearly 20 years, together Rob and his band of superb instrumentalists bring tonnes of collective experience and genuine musical chemistry to audiences all over London, the UK and beyond.

The idea originally grew out of 'Jones & Quo', a duo formed between new musical acquaintances Oli Jones and Rob Quo - meeting at a jam session, initially bonding over their love for old-time Blues and Jazz, they began to branch out and explore songs of all different eras and genres. Beginning their gigging life as a Jazz duo (Vocals/Piano), they then added the guitar to give a rootsy rhythmic drive to the sound. Both sophisticated instrumentalists in their own right, their natural chemistry creates a unique and enthralling dynamic which incorporates the best of many musical modes and textures. Drawn to anything with soul, Jones & Quo can rock, swing or groove, with improvisation at the core of everything they do.

This core dynamic/ethos has been continued and developed alongside an ever-expanding group of different musicians over the years. A bit more on a few of those featured:

Rob Quo is a singer-songwriter of 10 years and the constant around which Quo & Co revolves. Playing stages up and down the country and recording/releasing his own music as well as performing a broad repertoire of popular song in a variety of groups and combinations. A self-taught singer and guitarist, he has a unique, organic sound which brings fresh life and vigour to all the music he plays.

Oli Jones (pianist), a London Trinity Graduate, began playing as a straight-up jazz nut before exploring blues/honky-tonk and then mellowing into a general all-rounder. Oli has played in a great number of different groups and has lent his chops to many a recording session for Pop/Blues/Jazz artists alike.

Alex Chalstrey (pianist) met Rob Quo at school, where they first played with one another in professional Jazz Band, 'The CNS Allstars' performing gigs at Wilderness Festival, No.10 Downing Street and Cork Jazz Festival to name a few. On moving to London, Alex studied Jazz Piano at Guildhall and he and Rob began to play together as a duo. He has written, performed and released as part of Psych/Rock group 'Double-Cream' and plays in a variety of well-acclaimed wedding bands.

Sam Hollis is a Bass-player from Norwich who has been a professional musician for over 12 years. Like Rob he never studied music after leaving school, instead making his own way in the Capital gigging, composing and teaching. Sam and Rob met playing on the singer-songwriter scene and in recent years they have toured extensively, playing numerous concerts and functions around London and beyond.

Tim Gardner (pianist/multi-instrumentalist) is a graduate of Goldsmiths University in Greenwich and has forged his career on-stage with international touring bands like Rye X and Kerala Dust. When he's not touring the world, he teaches at university, plays piano for a community choir and records his own music as well as performing functions in a variety of different groups.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever played at?

Appearing at No.10 Downing St was a highlight!

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

We love old-time Jazz/Blues plus the great Soul singers of the 60's/70's! We love any contemporary music that channels these influences in new and exciting ways.

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

We've been gigging since we moved to London as fresh-faced 18 year olds. Since then we've played all over the country, Europe & beyond. We've done hundreds of gigs from Weddings, Parties, Bars, Pubs, Clubs, Marriage Proposals, Funerals, Wakes - if it's there to be played, we've done it!

What's your favourite type of event to play at?

When the sun's shining, nothing beats a garden party. Anytime you can get people together outside with some food, drink & live music - it doesn't get much better than that.

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

Set up requires 30/45 minutes
Our set's generally last 45 minutes to an hour, with any multiples of.

Are you happy to perform outside?

Yes, as long as there is shelter from any elements and an even surface to set-up on.

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

We are always happy to be guided on Set List. Generally, we ask for a few favourites from our repertoire and can tailor a set-list to suit, but we are more than happy to let the client take as many requests as they like from my song list (available via our profile).

Requests - I am always happy to learn special requests when time allows, but this must be arranged before-hand and special conditions may apply (though I don't usually charge!).

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

Laid-back and soulful. People always pick up on our chemistry and seem to love our selection of tunes!
