Piper, whistler and Scottish folk legend, Gordon Duncan
I’ve been working in theatre for 25 years as an actor, musician and writer. Performed on Broadway twice as well as cruise ships and throughout the UK as well as Australia and the USA.
Anything with a live band. Can’t beat it.
A set on the Pipes will last a maximum of 5/6 minutes after which a small break is required before playing again but generally less is more. They do make an enormous impression and fanfare of welcome or departure.
No - The bagpipes traditionally has only a 9 note scale and while some modern tunes are satisfyingly transposed onto the bagpipe scale some have too wide a musical range or use too many notes to be transposed recognisably to the bagpipes. But always worth an ask, I’m always happy for a challenge if you have that one special tune.
Notable non traditional bagpipe tunes I’ve adapted include; Send in the Clowns, Jurassic Park Theme, Thunderstruck AcDc, Singing in the Rain and a wide range of Hymns including Bread of Heaven and Lord of the Dance.
Just me performing once or twice to mark and arrival, a departure or an occasion.
Some people prefer the pipes playing outside but I suppose it depends on the size of the venue.
Clients always have a say and despite the limited range the bagpipes have I always try and accommodate.
