About / Biography

Samantha is a freelance violinist, classically trained at Birmingham Conservatoire to master's level. She performs all year round at weddings, parties, ceilidhs and many other events. As well as a huge classical repertoire, Samantha performs modern pop songs on the violin and can create a perfect setlist of your favourite artists and songs for your event. She is also a specialist in folk/gyspy/klezmer styles and plays regularly in these styles in other settings too. Samantha has a wide-ranging performing career, working with several orchestras and chamber groups and works regularly at the Royal Shakespeare Company. Since 2012, she has appeared in numerous productions and has often appeared on stage and in costume, playing from memory. Some of these performances have been broadcast live to cinemas and subsequently released on DVD. Samantha was a founding member of seven-piece cinematic folk septet the Old Dance School, now known as the Fair Rain. With them, she toured the UK and Europe in theatres, arts centres and festivals and released three studio albums and one live album. The band have won critical acclaim and have been featured several times on BBC Radio 2. She performed with them until 2015. Samantha has a busy freelance career combining events, theatre, orchestral and chamber work, session recording and also performing with ceilidh bands and folk groups.

Technical Info

What are your basic technical requirements?

I play acoustically, with a small wireless Bluetooth speaker for backing tracks.

I have Public Liability Insurance up to £10 million.

Do you provide sound and lighting equipment?

I am completely self-contained and acoustic, and I bring a small wireless Bluetooth speaker.

What information do you require about a venue?

If it is an outdoor ceremony, I need adequate shelter from the elements to protect my instrument. Unfortunately I cannot perform outdoors if it is raining. Contact details for the venue are helpful and I usually call the venue a couple of weeks prior to the event to introduce myself and confirm arrangements.

Can you provide a Spotify/DJ service before and between your sets?

Unfortunately, I don't provide this.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever played at?

I've played with orchestras, string quartets, ceilidh bands and folk acts, and have been lucky enough to tour China and the USA with the Royal Shakespeare Company. I've performed in the Albert Hall and at Glastonbury Festival!

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

I love so many genres of music, there is too much to choose from!

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

I studied at Birmingham Conservatoire and began performing professionally in all kinds of settings - weddings, events, orchestra concerts, ceilidh bands. I've performed at thousands of weddings since then!

What's your favourite type of event to play at?

I love playing at all events, but weddings are always incredibly special and an enormous pleasure to be a part of.

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

I normally arrive an hour before I am due to start performing but my setup time is very minimal! I am very flexible but often play for around 15/20 minutes as guests are arriving, then at the key points in the ceremony, and then for perhaps an hour/hour and a half of drinks reception, with a couple of very short breaks. This is not definitive - I am always happy to work around your requirements!

Are you happy to perform outside?

In appropriate temperatures, I am happy to perform outside but must have adequate protection from the elements, since string instruments are very sensitive to temperature/humidity changes. Unfortunately if it is raining then it is not possible to perform outside.

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

I have a huge repertoire and am happy to let clients pick particular songs they would like for key points in the ceremony - if a song is not listed that is very special to you, please let me know and I will do my best to arrange it for you! For the drinks reception, I ask clients to pick a few songs from my list and then I can build a set list around your tastes once I have a feel for the kind of music you like best!

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

"Samantha was superb. Right from communication via text or email, answering any questions we had, right to her performance. Can't recommend her enough. Thankyou Samantha. Will be in touch again I'm sure" - Darren, previous client
"What can I say Samantha was amazing at our wedding I would definitely recommend thank you again." - Katie, previous client

What other styles do you perform?

As well as Pop and classical, I have a specialism in Folk music from many different traditions. I have performed with folk bands and artists for all of my professional career, and am particularly experienced in Irish, Scottish, Klezmer, Swedish and many others.
