About / Biography

Tom studied music at the University of Birmingham (2002-2005) and has performed at a large number of venues since then. He has considerable experience performing at functions as a solo artist with backing tracks and in bands.

Everyone loves a good party and no party would be complete without music! The only thing that beats a great playlist in terms of atmosphere is live music, and which instrument is universally more popular than the saxophone? Although hiring a full band is an option for some, hiring a single musician gives you that classy live atmosphere and fantastic sound at a more affordable price.

Whether it's reception background music, a little entertainment while you sign your marriage register, or you really want to liven things up with some upbeat pop, Tom has something for you. For a taster of the kind of music you can expect to hear at your party, check out the Audio section.

Tom is an attention-to-detail person and understands how the organiser of a party wants things to be just right. He is, therefore, flexible, approachable and willing to discuss the finer details of any event in order to provide a tailor-made service.

Technical Info

What are your basic technical requirements?

Nothing required for small/medium venues, though access to plugs makes things easier. For larger venues, a PA system would need to be provided.

Do you provide sound and lighting equipment?

I provide a small amp that can be heard alongside my saxophone without a microphone. For larger events that require louder music, please get in touch. I do not provide lighting.

What information do you require about a venue?

It is useful to know if there is a plug nearby or if it is outdoors.

Can you provide a Spotify/DJ service before and between your sets?

Yes, I can put some music on while I set up and in between sets, but this would only be for about 10 minutes at a time as it doesn't take me long to set up.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever played at?

I've done lots of gigs over the past twenty years. I played as part of a band at a week-long festival to a daily audience of around 8000 people, but I usually play at small parties and weddings. The best gigs are the ones where the audience really get into the music and dance - the audience is the best 'fuel' for an energetic performance.

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

As a saxophonist, I am inspired by the great performers like Charlie Parker, Stan Getz, Eric Marienthal, Scott Hamilton, Courtney Pine, etc. I listen to Jazz Fm 91 day-to-day, but also love R&B, country and classical music! Then there are great pop, rock, hip hop and folk artists too. The greatest song of all time is an impossible question, because it depends on which genre suits the mood you're in. Some of my favourite artists include B.B. King, John Mayer, Ray Charles, Brad Paisley, Luke Combs, Ed Sheeran, Ella Fitzgerald, Oscar Peterson and many more!

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

I started playing the piano at 9, then saxophone from 12 and went on to major in saxophone at the University of Birmingham, with saxophone lessons at Birmingham Conservatoire. I started a jazz band at uni and have been in lots of bands throughout my life. However, I specialise in playing solo with backing tracks or DJs. I listed myself online and have had steady work since leaving university over twenty years ago. I've played at the NEC in Birmingham, Aston Villa football club, Battle Abbey, various castles, hotels, music venues, restaurants, vineyards, private homes, recording studios and even Brighton beach!

What's your favourite type of event to play at?

My favourite type of event is usually a small, private party in which the guests love what I'm doing and dance/sing along. I like to dress up for smart events, which gives it a sense of occasion for me as well.

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

Setup time: 15 minutes
Performing: maximum 2 hours

Are you happy to perform outside?

Yes

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

I usually play music I know well from either a jazz or a pop playlist, but I'm happy to accommodate a few requests. I prefer genres like jazz, pop and R&B, because they particularly suit the saxophone.

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

Please see my reviews for details. This depends quite a lot on whether it was background jazz, wedding ceremony music or energetic pop, whether solo or alongside a DJ.
