Question 1

How far in advance do we need to book your services?

Accepted Answer

Booking soul bands in Gorebridge, Midlothian as early as possible increases the chance of securing their availability on your event date, particularly during busy times of the year. However, many acts also accept last minute bookings, and we have successfully arranged performances for clients with just a few hours' notice.

Question 2

How much do soul bands cost in Gorebridge, Midlothian?

Accepted Answer

The cost of hiring musicians in Gorebridge, Midlothian can vary significantly depending on the type of act. Prices currently range from £420 to £7,080, with an average of £1,200.

Question 3

My venue has a sound limiter. Will this be a problem?

Accepted Answer

Sound limiters are now common at many UK wedding venues, particularly those in residential areas or with noise-sensitive neighbours. They work by cutting the power to amplified equipment if the volume exceeds a set threshold. Most professional bands can work within standard limiter settings without any real impact on the performance.

If your venue's limiter is set at 95dB or above, the majority of bands will have no difficulty. Below 95dB it is worth flagging to the band in advance, as they may need to adjust their setup, for example by using an electronic drum kit instead of an acoustic one, or opting for a smaller line-up. Ask your venue for the exact decibel level and pass it on when you make your enquiry, so the band can confirm they can accommodate it.

Question 4

How much space does a band need to set up and perform?

Accepted Answer

As a general guide, a 3-piece band needs a performance area of roughly 3m x 3m. Add approximately 1m of width for each additional musician. A 5-piece band would therefore need around 3m x 5m as a minimum. Most bands will also need a small amount of additional space at the sides or rear for equipment cases during the performance.

A raised stage is not essential but does help the band make a bigger visual impact, particularly in larger rooms. The performance area needs to be flat, dry and close to a power supply. If you are unsure whether your venue can accommodate a particular band, share the dimensions with them when enquiring and they will be able to advise. Venues with unusual layouts or low ceilings are worth flagging too.

Question 5

What happens to the music when the band is on a break?

Accepted Answer

Most professional bands provide a playlist through their PA system during intervals, so there is no gap in the music and no awkward silence while they take a break. This is usually included as standard and the band will typically put together a playlist that fits the mood of the evening.

Some acts offer an upgraded DJ service where a member of the band or a dedicated DJ manages the music between sets, takes requests and keeps the energy going. This is usually available as a paid add-on. Check the act's profile or ask when enquiring if this is something you would like.

Question 6

Do I need to book a separate DJ as well as a band?

Accepted Answer

In most cases, no. The majority of professional bands provide music through their PA system during intervals and after their final set, so your guests will have continuous music throughout the evening without needing a separate DJ. This is usually included in the booking.

If you want a more interactive DJ experience, with someone to take requests, mix tracks and keep the dancefloor going after the band finishes, many bands offer this as an optional upgrade, or you can book a DJ separately. It is worth deciding early how late you want music to continue, as a band's final set will typically finish by midnight or the venue curfew, and a DJ can be a cost-effective way of extending the night.

Question 7

What happens if the band cannot make it on the day?

Accepted Answer

Professional bands take their commitments seriously and cancellations are rare, but illness, accidents or unforeseen circumstances can occasionally affect a booking. It is worth checking what provisions are in place when you book. Many acts and agencies have contingency arrangements, such as calling on dep musicians or arranging a suitable replacement act at short notice.

When booking, make sure you receive a written contract that sets out the cancellation terms clearly, for both sides. If you are booking through an agency, ask specifically what happens in the event the act cannot perform. Keeping communication open with your band in the weeks before the event also helps flag any potential issues early.

Question 8

What size band do I need for my event?

Accepted Answer

Band size affects both the sound and the budget. A 3-piece can fill a dancefloor just as effectively as a larger act and tends to be better suited to smaller venues or those with sound restrictions. A 4 or 5-piece gives a fuller sound and more stage presence, which works well in larger rooms. Bigger show bands with brass sections, multiple vocalists or additional musicians create a more spectacular impact but cost more and need more space.

As a rough guide, match the band size to your guest numbers and venue capacity. For events up to around 100 guests, a 3 or 4-piece is usually ideal. For 150 or more, a 4 or 5-piece tends to work better. For very large events over 300 guests you may also need to consider whether the band's own PA system is sufficient, or whether additional sound equipment will be needed.

Question 9

How long do soul and Motown bands usually perform for?

Accepted Answer

Most soul and Motown bands perform for two hours of live music, typically split into two sets of 60 minutes or three sets of 40 minutes, with breaks in between. The exact format can usually be tailored to your event timeline. Some bands offer extended sets or a late finish for an additional fee if you want the live music to continue past midnight.

Between sets, most bands provide a playlist through their PA system so there is no gap in the music. If you want a more interactive experience during breaks, some acts offer a manned DJ service where a band member takes requests and keeps the energy going. Discuss your preferred format and finish time when booking so the band can plan accordingly.

Question 10

Can a soul or Motown band perform outdoors?

Accepted Answer

Soul and Motown bands can perform outdoors, but their larger lineups and amplified equipment mean there are important practical requirements. The band will need a covered stage area or marquee to protect instruments, amplifiers, speakers and microphones from rain and direct sunlight. A solid, level surface is essential, and reliable mains power is a must, as a full soul or Motown band typically draws more power than a smaller act.

Wind and ambient noise can affect sound quality outdoors, so a professional PA system with adequate power for the space is important. Discuss outdoor plans with the band early in the booking process so they can advise on what is needed. If there is any risk of bad weather, have an indoor backup plan in place.

Question 11

What equipment does a soul or Motown band provide?

Accepted Answer

Most professional soul and Motown bands are fully self-contained and bring everything they need to perform, including a PA system (speakers, mixing desk, microphones), backline amplifiers, instruments, stage lighting and often a DJ setup for music between sets. You generally do not need to hire any additional equipment unless the venue is unusually large.

Soul and Motown bands tend to have larger lineups than many other types of band, which means they need more stage space and more power sockets. A typical 5 or 6 piece band needs a performance area around 3m deep and 5m to 6m wide, working on roughly a metre of width per musician, with larger lineups requiring more. Confirm the band's technical requirements when booking and share them with your venue so that stage space, power supply and load-in access are all sorted well in advance.

Question 12

What type of music do soul and Motown bands play?

Accepted Answer

Soul and Motown bands play classic hits from the golden era of soul music, including songs by Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, The Supremes, Otis Redding, James Brown and The Jackson 5. Most also cover funk and disco from artists like Kool and The Gang, Earth Wind and Fire, Chaka Khan and Donna Summer, as well as modern soul-influenced pop and R&B from Bruno Mars, Beyonce, Amy Winehouse, Pharrell Williams and John Legend.

This mix of vintage classics and contemporary hits is one of the reasons soul and Motown bands are so popular for weddings and parties. The music appeals across generations, so guests of all ages tend to recognise and enjoy the repertoire. Browse audio and video clips on each band's profile to get a feel for their style and range.

Question 13

Can a soul or Motown band play at a wedding?

Accepted Answer

Soul and Motown bands are one of the most popular choices for wedding receptions. The music is upbeat, danceable and universally liked, which makes it easy to fill the dance floor with guests of all ages. Classics like Signed Sealed Delivered, My Girl, Superstition and Ain't No Mountain High Enough are wedding staples for good reason.

Many soul and Motown bands also offer a daytime option, such as a stripped-back trio or duo, for the ceremony or drinks reception. This means you can have live music throughout the day without booking separate acts. The full band then performs for the evening reception. Ask about all-day packages when enquiring if this appeals to you.

Question 14

What is the difference between a soul band and a Motown band?

Accepted Answer

In practice, most bands listed under either category play a very similar repertoire. Motown refers specifically to the sound and artists associated with Motown Records in Detroit during the 1960s and 70s, including The Supremes, The Temptations, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. Soul is a broader genre that encompasses Motown but also includes artists from other labels and eras, from Aretha Franklin and Otis Redding through to modern performers like Amy Winehouse and John Legend.

A band listed as a Motown band may focus more heavily on that classic 1960s Motown sound, while a soul band may cover a wider range of soul, funk, R&B and disco. However, the overlap is significant and many bands appear in both categories. If you have a preference for a particular era or style, check the band's repertoire list and listen to their audio clips before enquiring.

Question 15

Do soul and Motown bands offer daytime or acoustic sets?

Accepted Answer

Many soul and Motown bands offer a stripped-back option for daytime events, such as a vocal duo or trio with piano or acoustic guitar. This is ideal for wedding ceremonies, drinks receptions and wedding breakfasts where a softer, more intimate sound is preferred. The full band then joins for the evening reception.

Booking a daytime set from the same band that performs in the evening can be more cost-effective than hiring a separate act for each part of the day, and it gives the event a consistent feel. Not all bands offer this, so ask specifically about daytime or acoustic options when making an enquiry. Some acts also offer a jazz or lounge-style set as an alternative to their usual high-energy performance.

Question 16

Are soul and Motown bands suitable for corporate events?

Accepted Answer

Soul and Motown bands are a popular choice for corporate events including awards ceremonies, gala dinners, product launches, Christmas parties and summer functions. The music is crowd-pleasing and works well across a broad range of guests and ages, making it a safe choice for events where attendees may not share the same musical tastes.

Many soul and Motown bands have extensive experience performing at corporate functions and can adapt their volume and style to suit the format. For example, they might play a quieter set during a dinner and then raise the energy for a dance floor set afterwards. When enquiring for a corporate event, check whether the band holds public liability insurance and confirm their experience with similar events.

Question 17

What should I check with my venue before booking a soul or Motown band?

Accepted Answer

Soul and Motown bands tend to be larger than average, so it is worth confirming a few things with your venue before booking. Check whether there is a sound limiter and, if so, what decibel level it is set at. Most professional bands can work within standard limiter settings of 95dB or above, but tighter limits may require the band to adjust their setup. Ask about the available stage or performance area dimensions and check them against what the band needs, as a 5 or 6 piece line up takes noticeably more room than a smaller band.

Also confirm load-in access (are there stairs, narrow doorways or restrictions on timing?), the number of available power sockets, whether the venue has a music curfew, and parking arrangements for a van or large vehicle. Sharing these details with the band early avoids surprises on the day.

Question 18

What information should I give to a soul or Motown band before my event?

Accepted Answer

Once you have confirmed your booking, the band will usually get in touch to gather the details they need. It helps to have the following ready: the full venue address with postcode, load-in access details, the location within the venue where the band will perform, your event timeline with the times you want live music, any sound restrictions or limiter details from the venue, and a contact number for someone at the venue on the day.

If you have song requests or a specific first dance song, share these as early as possible. Most bands are happy to learn a first dance if given enough notice. Also confirm whether the band needs a hot meal (most do for events where they are on site for several hours) and whether you have any dietary requirements to pass on to the venue.

Question 19

What is a soul band?

Accepted Answer

A soul band is a live act that performs music rooted in the soul genre, covering everything from the classic recordings of the 1960s and 70s through to modern soul, funk, R&B and disco. Typical lineup sizes range from a 4 piece (vocals, guitar, bass and drums) to larger ensembles of 7 or more musicians with brass sections, backing vocalists and keyboards. The bigger the lineup, the fuller and more powerful the sound.

Soul music is characterised by its strong vocals, rhythmic grooves and emotional delivery. A good soul band will cover artists spanning several decades, from Aretha Franklin, James Brown and Al Green to Amy Winehouse, Bruno Mars and Lizzo. The genre's energy and danceability make soul bands a popular choice for weddings, parties and corporate events where getting guests onto the dance floor is the priority.
