About / Biography

We are a professional authentic Gypsy Jazz Swing Duo based in Yorkshire, available for Weddings, Private Parties, Vintage Fairs, cafes/restaurants, and any other event you may be planning!

Graduates of Hull College and Hull University, Dave and Rob have over 70 years of playing experience between them, are both guitar tutors around Yorkshire, and are professional musicians in their own right, having toured the UK and Europe many times.

Our passion lies in honouring the legacy of Gypsy Jazz Swing Music in the style of the much adored and respected Django Reinhardt, playing classics from the standard repertoire, and also taking modern songs and giving them the gypsy swing treatment (see our Setlist for more information).

Endorsed by none other than the Gypsy Jazz legend Robin Nolan himself!

We love playing Gypsy swing music, and play all types of events from theatres, to clubs, to engagement parties, to weddings...if vintage vibe is your thing, book Ain't Got That Swing!

Technical Info

What are your basic technical requirements?

We need a performance space of at least 3 meters x 2 meters. We do not require any power sockets of power in general, and one parking space.

Do you provide sound and lighting equipment?

We provide our own battery powered amplifiers, but as we are a portable duo we do not bring any lighting

What information do you require about a venue?

We need to know any directions that will help us find the venue and find the right place to load in our equipment. We’d also need to be informed if there’s a sound limiter in the venue. Timings are very important, and we need to know when we are able to access the venue for setup and soundcheck (we usually require around an hour).

Can you provide a Spotify/DJ service before and between your sets?

Contact us for details

What equipment do you use?

We bring 2x battery powered amplifiers, usually 2-4 guitars, and if required a gazebo to play under.

We keep our setup as simple and portable as possible, which means we are vastly more reliable than if we were tied to a power socket!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever played at?

We performed at the theatre Albemarle in Hull, supporting the world renowned gypsy swing player Robin Nolan! Performing an hours set of traditional gypsy swing music, mixed with our unique arrangements of modern songs in the traditional style. The audience feedback was amazing, and we loved the opportunity to perform on a big stage and gain the experience of delivering a powerful performance when i mattered. We just love playing this music!

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

Django Reinhardt is the first and foremost influence, withe his most well known song being Minor Swing. This is the catchiest gypsy jazz song, but we are also influenced by pop music such as the Beatles (we have made our own medley), ABBA (again, our own medley), rock music, blues and acoustic folk music, as well as grunge and metal music. We bring all of these styles into our playing. Modern influences in the gypsy style are Joscho Stephan, Remi Harris, Robin Nolan, the Rosenbergs, Moreno Winterstein, Duved Dunayevsky.

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

Between us, we have over 70+ years playing experience on the guitar, both starting in childhood, and are now accomplished music tutors, and as musicians have gigged and toured throughout Europe and America since youth, also attaining college and university qualifications.

We started our duo around 4 years ago, simply from the love of playing Gypsy Jazz. Our unique angle is vast experience of wedding and corporate events/festivals, and tailoring our arrangements to suit these type of events.

We use vintage instruments and wear vintage clothing.

What's your favourite type of event to play at?

We love playing at all sorts of events but weddings are our favourite! The guests are always happy and we have had many compliments on our arrangements and style of music. Feedback from such events is that we are a perfect bridge between the post-ceremony drinks to the evening formalities and events.
We have also played at many vintage fairs and private functions-basically, we are a Swiss Army knife for events, and can negotiate locations and set lengths to suit the clients.

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

We normally arrive 1 hour before the performance to set up. We normally perform 2 x 45 minutes or 2 x 60 minute sets. We’re happy to play a bit longer or shorter but we’ve found that these set times suit us and our clients best.

Are you happy to perform outside?

Yes, but we require either a gazebo-type structure from the venue, or to be informed that we need to bring our own.

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

We have a set repertoire, but are happy to pick and choose from this, and also we will happily make musical arrangements of up to two songs, as long as we have more than 4 weeks notice.

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

Previous clients have said:

"We booked Rob and Dave for our wedding, and although our expectations were already very high from their demo videos, they exceeded them and very much helped make our day perfect!

They were very easy to work with, the booking and planning process was seamless and they are very flexible in terms of requests (though we wanted more traditional gypsy jazz which they were also very happy to do).

As well as being very talented gypsy jazz guitarists, they obviously love what they do and it was fantastic meeting them properly after. They completely elevated our afternoon, creating a fun and energetic yet classy cocktail hour.

I would recommend Ain't That Got Swing to anyone wanting great music that will put a smile on people's faces at any event as they did for our wedding.

These guys are fantastic!"
