Technical Info

What are your basic technical requirements?

My only requirement is protection from the elements if playing outside, as wind and/or even light rain can be hazardous to the equipment. I do have an option gazebo if required. I do not need access to power.

Do you provide sound and lighting equipment?

Yes I bring my own PA/speakers, mics etc. I can also bring lights if required.

What information do you require about a venue?

Location, parking and access directions. Ideally a contact name and number for the staff member to be in attendance on the day. Any details about any sound constraints or limitations.

Can you provide a Spotify/DJ service before and between your sets?

By arrangement yes - please advise in advance if this is required.

How long does it take you to set up?

20 minutes is more than ample, and even to include a soundcheck.

Do you need to plug into an electrical outlet?

No, not unless the booking requires that I bring my own lights, which do require power. The rest of my gear is state-of-the-art battery powered equipment, so does not need to be plugged in.

Is your equipment PAT tested?

Any equipment that needs to be plugged into mains electricity is PAT tested annually. However my main equipment is state-of-the-art battered powered gear for which PAT testing is inappropriate and not required, and this is all I ever bring to 95% of my bookings.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever played at?

There have been so many, and so many great ones, all for different reasons. Freshest in my memory is my last wedding, which was last weekend (as I write this). The way the entire room stood up and cheered and applauded me as I was saying my goodbyes truly moved me.

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

My earliest saxophone influence was Grover Washington Junior. I loved his song Mr. Magic. This was years before I actually started playing saxophone myself. I also adore a lot of the old jazz standards. But a lifetime of music has influenced me, and it's impossible, (and would be wrong) to single out one individual artist or song. Life is music, music is life.

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

I started out as a computer programmer and then business owner and business consultant, and came to the saxophone late in life and took to it immediately - that was 14 years ago. After a year I pulled together a jazz quartet and we started gigging, very regularly in the early years, but slowed down a lot when Covid hit. We do still play a handful of gigs a year. I also quickly started to write my own songs, and released an album of original material based on the golden era of jazz, and have had many of those songs played on local BBC Introducing radio stations, even being named as Worcestershire's artist of the week. 5 years ago I started gigging solo as SantaSax. Initially busking as Santa complete with whitened beard, and quickly began getting bookings straight off the back of busking - hence yet another change in career was born. Every year sees me playing more weddings, and then SantaSax getting increased demand each festive season. It's the dream job if I'm honest.

What's your favourite type of event to play at?

Any gig where people are listening. If they get up and dance even better. But I just love to play for people. So I really don't mind what type of event it is.

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

I am hugely flexible, although I must admit I'm not too keen on very short gigs. I love to play so anything less than an hour feels like the fun has just started when I have to stop. I can play long sessions, and long sets if needed, but am equally happy breaking sessions up, perhaps to move between different performance positions within a venue, or to play outdoors etc.

Are you happy to perform outside?

Yes, and I do regularly, even in December. In fact that's fine as SantaSax as the big ref suit is WARM! If it's winter I tend to wear fingerless gloves. Rain and wind can be an issue of course. I can bring a gazebo. If it's direct sun I often put up an umbrella on a speaker stand, mainly to shield electronic gear to prevent any risk of overheating. I really am very used to it.

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

They absolutely have a huge say in it! I have an extensive multi-genre repertoire list with hours and hours of material that they are encouraged to cherry pick their sets from if they wish. And if they have any additional requests for songs I don't happen to do already, I'm more than happy to let them know if I could source them and pick them up for them. Which is part of the reason my repertoire list is constantly growing.

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

I have reviews on multiple platforms. Over 40 reviews, and without a single negative comment. On the platform with the biggest number of reviews, every one is 5 stars out of 5 stars. My social media reviews are 100% recommends. Reviewers speak of my great playing, my great variety of material, and of how down to earth and communicative I am. And I absolutely take pride in all of those things.
