About / Biography

Our dances are combined with the sounds of traditional music putting you in touch with the culture of the Celtic nations. Our caller ensures that everyone feels included, encouraged and has a great time!

We perform traditional music from Ireland and Scotland and call the popular dances thereof combined with evocative song and melody (please make sure you request our singer if you require this at your event). No knowledge of the dance is required. Michael, from Derry, is our lead fiddle player. He is the resident fiddle tutor at the Irish Cultural Centre in Hammersmith. He has an extensive traditional repertoire from Donegal, Clare and Cork. Andrea plays concertina and has performed at sessions and ceilidhs in London and the Southeast throughout her musical life. Both Andrea and Michael have plenty of experience performing together in multiple settings In the UK and Ireland. Having first met in Covent Garden (in 2010), we began performing traditional music together on the London 'trad scene'. Now as a happily married couple we are well experienced and joined by the highest quality accompanists and singers from the traditional music scene whom we have built strong musical partnerships with over the years. Our music is both diverse and colourful in its dynamic and textural qualities.

We have performed at many ceilidh's for weddings, birthdays and private parties over the years. We provide high quality sound and exceptional musicianship combined with our fun and engaging caller. We are able to adapt our style and speed to suit your tastes and the ability of the dancers. We perform authentic traditional music mixed with modern trad compositions and interpretations.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever played at?

We have performed at many stunning wedding venues across the South East. For Burn's night, we have performed at the Oxford Colleges e.g. Queens College. For St Patrick's day we have performed in many location in London. Recently we performed at some of our local pubs in High Wycombe with our singers e.g. the Cherry Tree, O'Neills and the Social Club.

Michael: The Houses of Parliament in Westminster and performed for King Charles in the Irish Centre in Hammersmith. This was a great opportunity to entertain and perform for royalty. Michael played in Cork City Hall for over 1000 guests with Cork Symphony Orchestra. An exhilarating experience.

Andrea: Wembley Conference centre for 2500 people supporting Deloris Keane. This was a unique opportunity and Andrea also played on a riverboat with her uncle Roy in the past.

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

We love our trad bands: Altan, Danu, Lunasa, Sharon Shannon, Dervish to name but a few; and the favourite singers are Bob Dylan, the Pogues, the Waterboys, the Tumblin Paddies, Kate Rusby, Cara Dillon.

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

The Sweeney Ceilidh Band formed in 2023. Andrea, Michael's wife, played with Hooley for 10 years prior to this. When Andrea was a teenager, she played with her uncle Roy's band, Jig and a Half. Michael completed a performance diploma in traditional music and played in Irish 'trad' sessions when living in Ireland. He worked with singers and musicians in Derry, Donegal and Cork in Ireland from 2000-2010. When he arrived in London in 2010 he began playing with an assortment of ceilidh bands, musicians and singers.

What's your favourite type of event to play at?

We love to provide ceilidhs and traditional music. We perform at all sorts of events including weddings and parties. The guests always enjoy our ceilidh dances and traditional folk music. We get a great 'buzz' from entertaining them and playing with our amazing backers/ singers living in London.

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

We arrive 1 hour before the performance to set up. We perform 2 x 45 minutes or 2 x 60 minute sets with a break in between. We’ve found that these set times suit us and our audiences best. An early start/ late finish is available with us performing traditional background music (melodies and/or songs) for you while guests arrive and/or after the ceilidh. Please ask for a quote if you are interested.

Are you happy to perform outside?

We’re happy to play outside during summer months (weather permitting) but we ask for shade, a flat level surface and a power supply close to the performance area. Please note that a wet weather contingency must be prepared.

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

We can learn specific songs before the event (additional fee). The clients are welcome to pick a set list from our repertoire or let us choose the music for them. We have an extensive set list and may well know your preferred song already.

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

Previous customers describe us as easy to work with and comment on a great evening's entertainment. Our caller makes everyone feel welcome and gets your feet moving.

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

We always try our best to be flexible to help ensure your event runs as smoothly as possible. If timings change slightly in the run up to the event just let us know and we will do our best to accommodate you.
