Technical Info

What are your basic technical requirements?

Armless chairs for each musician, and space-wise, about 1m50cm squared per musician
Please provide parking information
If performing outside, please provide bad weather alternatives. We will not play in the rain.

Do you provide sound and lighting equipment?

We can perform acoustically - ideal for small rooms and smaller gatherings.
We can also bring our own simple set up of microphones/pickups and amps, but would need power sockets for this.
We cannot bring a full PA system. If this is something you provide, we would need a mixing desk that has inputs for all instrumentalists +48V, speakers, and ideally individual monitors if the space is very loud.
We are happy to discuss the technicalities and find a solution that works best for your event.
We cannot bring our own lighting.

What information do you require about a venue?

Parking
Sound + lighting tech spec
What time we can arrive
If there is a safe, lockable space for us to leave valuables.

Can you provide a Spotify/DJ service before and between your sets?

Can be discussed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever played at?

Fran & Flora (violin and cello duo) has been playing together since 2010, performing many special concerts (venues, festivals and house concerts), as well as for weddings, parties, funerals, Klezmer ceilidhs, and have been told we set the tone perfectly. While we can go out as soloists and as a duo, we also love to collaborate with fellow Klezmer musicians - hence International Klezmer Collective was created, to play the amazing repertoire of Yiddish speaking Eastern Europe in larger ensembles (see below for more info.)

We can also offer Klezmer workshops (song, dance, instrumental).

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

All the Klezmer greats, as well as the string band music of Transylvania and Roma music.

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

International Klezmer Collective features Flora Curzon (fidl, UK), Francesca Ter-Berg (cello, UK) – who make up the critically acclaimed duo Fran & Flora - often with regular collaborator, Anna Lowenstein (fidl, UK) + any number of special guests. The band can be expanded to include accordion, bass, drums to suit your budget and purpose!

Our collaborators include pioneering and renowned Klezmer musicians Zoe Aqua (fidl, USA), Susi and Szilvia (clarinet, accordion UK/Germany), Simon Roth (drums UK), Josh Middleton (accordion UK) Dan Gouly (clar.UK), Ilana Cravitz (violin + Klezmer ceilidh caller UK) Merlin & Polina Shepherd (clarinet, piano, vocals, UK), Cantor Rachel Weston (Vox, UK), all of whom share a passion and creative spirit for the equally soulful and driving music of Yiddish speaking Eastern Europe.

What's your favourite type of event to play at?

We love playing all sorts of events, especially weddings, celebrations of any kind, and funerals.
Fran & Flora also play straight concerts for listening audiences.

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

1 hr before the music is set to begin as a minimum

Are you happy to perform outside?

There needs to be shade for the musicians if it is sunny, and wet/windy weather contingencies, as we cannot play in the rain / stormy conditions. We will also need a flat surface and a power supply close to the performance area if we are using amps.

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

Requests can be discussed.

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

Clients have told us we set the tone perfectly as background performers for their events, as well as playing music for reflection time at funerals.
