About / Biography

One of the UK's top banjo players and an accomplished singer and guitarist, Dan Walsh has been described as combining 'virtuoso playing and winning songwriting'. As well as six critically acclaimed albums and successful tours throughout the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Europe, Dan has performed in the studio or on stage with such distinguished names as Imelda May, Joss Stone, Ward Thomas, Seth Lakeman and the Levellers. He is also a nominee for BBC Folk Awards Musician of the Year.

Describing what Dan does is no easy task but at the heart of it is British, Irish and American folk music delivered with a healthy dose of funky grooves – all performed with his unique and dazzling take on clawhammer style banjo helping to challenge all preconceptions about the instrument. Add to all that poignant songs, astonishing musical departures and lively humour and the result is a truly memorable live show which has wowed audiences across the world from intimate seated rooms to huge dancing crowds in festival fields.

Dan has performed at countless theatres, arts centres and festivals but also has extensive experience performing at all manner of functions such as weddings, wakes and parties. He began his career playing in pubs and thrived on the witty banter and lively atmosphere on such occasions! His repertoire is also very extensive - alongside his own material he has a wide range of numbers from folk, jazz, rock and pop and has frequently been booked by organisations such as Music In Hospitals and Live Music Now for his ability to respond to unexpected requests, seemingly plucking the words and music of songs he's never actually performed out of thin air!

Finally, he is a firm believer in music and outreach and as a result performs extensively in nursing homes throughout the country. He plays concerts combining the best of well known material to stir memories with upbeat folk music to get feet tapping! Much of this work was done through the prestigious Live Music Now scheme which included a memorable residency at a Surrey care home which rekindled the musical and personal fire in former musician Glen Mason who was one of the residents. Dan’s song ‘The Song Always Stays’ was inspired by the experience and Live Music Now subsequently launched a campaign for music in care homes using the name of the song.

Technical Info

What are your basic technical requirements?

I require a plug socket and not too much else other than enough space for me and a small PA.

Do you provide sound and lighting equipment?

Yes I can provide a full PA system.

What information do you require about a venue?

Any instructions regarding directions, parking and load-in are very helpful.

Can you provide a Spotify/DJ service before and between your sets?

I can play music from an ipod but would charge extra to stay later than my finish time.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever played at?

Performing with my band The Urban Folk Quartet at Cropredy Festival was a dream come true as it's a festival I'd always wanted to play and was to 20,000 people.

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

I have been influenced by many different artists from many different genres! I have to mention Horslips, Alison Krauss, The Beatles, Paul Simon, Kirsty Maccoll, Gerry O'Connor and the Saw Doctors but there are countless others...

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

I began performing in pubs aged 16 after a chance meeting with a busker in the centre of Stafford! I have now been gigging 26 years and have played all over the world at festivals, theatres, arts centres, pubs, weddings, wakes, care homes, schools and even in a couple of caves!

What's your favourite type of event to play at?

I love performing basically! Any gig where the audience are having a good time is good by me.

Do you prefer banjo or guitar?

There's no doubt that banjo is my absolute forte and the instrument I love best but I do also love the guitar and singing.

Do you see yourself in a particular genre?

Not really but I guess folk is my first love. I have a decent repertoire of real book jazz standards, rock/pop hits particularly from the 60s-90s and am also a lover of funk, Indian music, Cuban music and many other things!

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

Usually arriving an hour or so before performance time seems to work. Performance-wise, 2 x 45 minutes is fairly standard but happy to be flexible.

Are you happy to perform outside?

Very happy to play outside as long as there's power and some cover in case of rain or severe heat.

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

Happy to get a few requests but I do generally prefer to choose my setlist. However, I always try and tailor it to the event!

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

Clients enjoy my instrumental skills and the fact I always try and keep my performances entertaining with plenty of humour! I try and keep the repertoire very varied too.
