Start by thinking about which parts of the day you want live music for and what style suits each. A singer performing during the ceremony or drinks reception needs a different feel to one covering the evening party. Some wedding singers specialise in a particular style, such as jazz standards, acoustic pop or classical, while others are versatile enough to adjust their set across the day. Listening to audio samples and watching performance videos is the most reliable way to judge whether a singer's voice and style match what you are looking for. Pay attention to how they sound in a live setting rather than just studio recordings, and check reviews from real couples who have booked them for weddings.

A wedding singer can cover several parts of the day, and many offer packages that include more than one. The most common options are the ceremony (entrance music, signing of the register, exit), drinks reception, wedding breakfast and the evening party. A softer acoustic or classical style usually works best for the ceremony and drinks reception, while a more upbeat set with backing tracks suits the evening. Not every singer covers all parts of the day, so check when enquiring. If you want one performer to cover everything from the ceremony through to the evening, make sure they are comfortable switching styles and ask about the total performance time included in their fee.

Most wedding singers are happy to learn at least one special request, and this is often included in their standard fee. First dance songs and ceremony entrance music are the most common requests. Let the singer know your choice as early as possible so they have time to prepare a proper arrangement. If the song is particularly complex or unusual, the singer will usually be honest about whether it suits their voice and style. Some singers are willing to learn additional requests beyond the first one, though there may be a small extra charge for the rehearsal time involved.

A wedding singer is a solo performer, which makes them more affordable, easier to accommodate in smaller venues and quicker to set up than a full band. They take up much less space and are less likely to trigger sound limiters. Most solo singers perform to backing tracks, which gives a fuller sound than just a voice and instrument alone. A wedding band offers a bigger visual impact and more stage energy, which tends to work better for filling a large dancefloor later in the evening. Many couples book a singer for the daytime parts of the wedding (ceremony, drinks reception, wedding breakfast) and a band or DJ for the evening party, getting the best of both.

Most professional wedding singers are self-contained and bring their own PA system, microphone, backing track setup and sometimes lighting. This means they can perform without relying on any venue equipment, which makes them a flexible option for a wide range of spaces including outdoor ceremonies and marquees. For larger venues or guest counts over 200, it is worth checking with the singer whether their PA is powerful enough for the space. If your venue already has a sound system, let the singer know as they may prefer to use it. Singers performing at the ceremony and then again later in the day will usually set up once in the main reception space and use a smaller portable setup for the ceremony if it is in a different location.

It depends on how you want the evening to run. Many wedding singers provide a playlist or DJ service between their live sets and after their final performance, so there is continuous music throughout the evening without needing to book a separate DJ. Check whether this is included when you enquire. If you want a more interactive DJ experience with live mixing, requests and a dedicated person managing the dancefloor after the singer finishes, booking a separate DJ for the later part of the evening is worth considering. Some couples also book a singer for the daytime and a DJ or band for the evening as separate acts.

Many wedding singers perform to pre-recorded backing tracks played through their PA system. These are professionally produced instrumental arrangements that give a full, polished sound without the need for a live band. The singer controls the tracks and adjusts the volume and energy to suit the room. Backing tracks allow a solo singer to cover a much wider range of songs than they could with just a guitar or piano. The quality varies between performers, so listening to audio or video samples on their profile is the best way to judge how the tracks sound in practice. Some singers offer a choice between acoustic sets (voice and instrument only) and backing track sets, which gives flexibility across different parts of the day.

Wedding singer is a broad term that covers several different types of performer. The most common options include acoustic singer-guitarists, who perform stripped-back versions of popular songs with just a voice and guitar; solo vocalists who sing to high-quality backing tracks, giving a fuller band-like sound without the cost of multiple musicians; singing pianists, who provide an elegant option for ceremony or dinner music; and jazz or swing singers for a vintage feel. Some wedding singers are versatile enough to cover more than one style. An acoustic performer might switch to backing tracks for a higher-energy evening set, for example. When browsing, pay attention to the audio and video samples on each profile to understand what style they specialise in.

Leeds has a growing events and wedding scene with venues ranging from city centre hotels and the Royal Armouries to converted mill buildings and country houses in the surrounding Yorkshire countryside. A solo singer suits all of these settings and needs very little space or setup time. City centre parking is straightforward outside of rush hour. If your venue is in one of the converted industrial buildings around the Calls or Granary Wharf area, check whether there are any access restrictions for suppliers. For venues in the Yorkshire countryside, particularly near Harrogate, Ilkley, and the Dales, make sure the singer has clear directions, as some rural venues are reached via narrow roads. Confirm whether a travel supplement applies for more distant locations.

A wedding singer's performance time depends on which parts of the day they are covering. For a ceremony, a singer typically performs for 20 to 40 minutes, covering guest arrival, the bridal entrance, signing of the register, and the exit. A drinks reception set usually lasts around one to one and a half hours, and an evening reception set is typically two 45-minute sets or one longer set of around 90 minutes. Many wedding singers offer packages that cover multiple parts of the day, moving from an acoustic ceremony performance through to a more upbeat evening set with backing tracks or a full PA. If you want your singer to cover the whole day, discuss this when booking as it will affect the price. The singer will need breaks between sets, but most provide a playlist through their PA during any gaps so the music continues.

Most wedding singers can perform outdoors, though the requirements depend on whether they are singing acoustically or with amplification. An acoustic performance with no PA works well for small outdoor ceremonies where the singer is close to the guests, but the sound will not carry far. For a drinks reception or larger outdoor gathering, the singer will need their PA system, which requires access to a mains power supply or a suitable generator. Rain is a serious risk to PA equipment, microphones, and any electronic backing track devices, so a solid canopy or marquee over the performance area is essential. Wind can interfere with sound quality and blow sheet music or lyric stands. Cold weather affects vocal performance, so outdoor singing in winter is generally best avoided. If you are planning an outdoor ceremony or drinks reception, discuss this with the singer in advance and make sure there is a backup indoor option.
