Review Centre: Barn Dance Bands

"Black Velvet Band Ceilidh Trio provided a brilliant ceilidh for our wedding celebrations at Goldney Hall, Bristol on 12 August 2017. What a fantastic evening! The band entertained our hardy Scottish guests with well-known Scottish dances but it was most enjoyable to see English friends and family ceilidh dancing for the first time and loving it! The dances were called very clearly and were quite ambitious so there was much hilarity. It was infectious fun and everyone got involved. (The dance floor was almost too small!) Mike and the band were extremely accommodating, professional and enthusiastic. The band has a huge repertoire and organised the evening flawlessly, from our first dance (Gay Gordons) to the throwing of the bouquet and the final Circassian Circle. Highly recommended. Thanks again for a fantastic evening of fun!"

"Kip and the band were excellent!! Brilliant, clear calling which made the evening both straightforward and so much fun. They had a lovely mix of songs - some that we had heard before and some new ones (to us) - but all perfectly performed. We had a joy filled evening dancing and would highly recommend this band to others."

"We had a really great evening. The musicians were very friendly and accommodating. When some of our guests were late arriving because of the dreaded road closure and subsequent diversions, they adapted their sets to suit our timings and many non-dancers were encouraged to get up and shake a leg. Everyone said how much they enjoyed themselves and we would certainly recommend and use them again."

"Black Velvet Band Hoedown Trio / 7oaks TriClub Hoedown Barn Dance / November 2024 The Black Velvet Hoedown Trio were superb on Saturday 16th November for our annual 7Oaks TriClub dinner dance. We had 50 members turn up at the Chipstead Sailing Club Clubhouse, and I can tell you that as soon as Mike and his band started playing the first set, everyone got up to dance! There were high levels of energy in the room and the Hoedown Trio rose to the occasion spectacularly, matching our enthusiasm and giving us little anecdotes on the history of the dance with instructions as we cooled down and grabbed a different partner. The band were duly fed and watered with a delicious Greek buffet, and by special request they played a Greek dance to thank the chefs. I think Black Velvet were stunned with the energy levels and full dance floor - and there was no slacking from music or dancing. By the end of the second set we were all perspiring in a good way!!!! There have been calls from many members to make this an annual event, so rest assured we will re-book the chaps for a rematch! A fantastic evening had by all. Many thanks to Mike and the band. "

"Hi Fiddlestix, Just a quick note to say thank you very much for the fabulous performances and ceilidh yesterday. The music was hugely complimented by our guests, and we had a wonderful time. Thanks to Mary’s great calling everyone got into the swing of it so readily - even the ceilidh novices! John’s mum Jill wanted to pass on her feedback too: “the music was highly impressive and the caller was top quality - we very much enjoyed the ceilidh”. " Davie, I just wanted to contact you to say, ‘thank you VERY much, indeed’ to you and your band members for performing last Friday evening at the annual Grange Dyvours Tennis Club ‘Snow Ball’ and making it the tremendous success that it was. I have been to many weddings, ceilidhs and parties over the years and danced to many bands and I can tell you, without a shadow of a doubt, that ‘The Shooglers’ stand head and shoulders above the rest. Who would have thought that weaving in Pink Floyd and Deep Purple tracks in the middle of a Dashing White Sergeant would have worked but it did! You were an absolute pleasure to deal with, before our event; you all drove a considerable distance to arrive, at exactly the time requested, to set up all your equipment then, after our dinner, you returned to put on the most amazing performance. Some of our (non-Scottish) members had never danced some of the dances before but you made sure to talk everyone through what was expected, as a warm up, before the mayhem began. My face was sore laughing, at the end of some of those dances. Just brilliant. Our ‘Snow Ball’ on Friday evening was an astounding success and we have you to thank for that. Absolutely first class. P.s. Also, thanks for taking our booking for our ball, next Christmas. I wanted to get in quick to secure you as I know how much in demand you are! "

"Speechless - and that's not like me. The band were fantastic - they are the best of the best, on a par with The Dubliners. Absolutely made our evening, this will be the first band we look to for all our future events without a doubt. The Caller was great fun, all of them were a compliment to each other.
