Review Centre: Celtic Groups & Ceilidh Bands

"Well, we went along to the Clutha benefit gig in The Classic Grand, there were such a choice of great bands to choose from on 2 floors, The Mrs & I were downstairs as it was mostly rock bands and we had a seat, so the bands changed again & again until I heard the next band was a Ceilidh band, quite a few were looking around sort of laughing as if how’s this gonna fit in with the night, so there's now quite a few people sitting down waiting, so on comes as expected the usual accordion, fiddle,drummer & guitarist set up, and then it began, the accordion started then in came the fiddle then this electric rock guitar and ass-kicking rock drum beat, and low and behold before you know it everybody's on their feet standing poking their heads up and down to see who the hell was making this amazingly blended sound of rock & Scottish folk, the accordion player’s fingers were impossible to track as they rolled up and down the board, and the fiddle was just about glowing to match, topped off with a great guitar and drums, with bits of Pink Floyd through to Miley Cyrus flung in, hard to believe but true, and all served up for your ears to savour at 100 mph, the whole place became electric, it was amazing to listen to and stunning to watch, I can’t say enough how much we enjoyed this band, We got talking to David (the accordion player) and his family afterwards and found him such a laugh & such a nice family, highlight of the night, so thanks to The Shooglers your time & talent is very well spent and it shows cheers. "

"We had an amazing time and everyone has said how much they enjoyed it. Even a couple of friends who were very sceptical of Ceilidhs were won over and had a great time! One of my American friends who had no experience of folk music just walked up to me and said 'This is the best thing since....just the best'."

"Just a short note to say that Blackthorn we absolutely excellent !They played brilliantly and really connected well with the audience. All excellent musicians and great performers and were thouroughly enjoyed by all who came. Worth every penny ! I hope they will consider joining us again next year. "We've seen Ben and The Shamrock Experience before (at a local pub where they were playing) and I asked them to play at my 50th. Communication beforehand was perfect and Ben made sure that he and the DJ were in tune so as not to overlap on the night. The evening itself was amazing, with lots of dancing and enjoyment. Whilst I doubt any of us will be winning any competitions any time soon, everyone has said what a great time it was and how good the Ceilidh band were."

"Luisa was an incredible addition to our wedding day - listening back to clips of her playing brings the two of us to tears with all the happy memories it brings back, and our guests thought she was wonderful. We appreciated how flexible she was, moving around so we could hear her better, and learning a song specifically for us. She was a delight, and we're very grateful. We would wholeheartedly recommend her to anyone who asked us."

"Very many thanks to FOB. You were awesome! At the Reel club ceilidh last Monday, there was a great band, and enthusiastic dancers, but very few of them, which seemed a poor omen. However, I needn't have worried – what a contrast last night! More than double the numbers, a complete sell out! A great start to the year, with lots of freshers having a fantastic time, dancing to your music. Many thanks from me and the Round."

"We were very happy with both the band and the caller at our wedding celebrations. You made things very easy for all ages to join in and my two year old grandson loved taking part - he had the time of his life! We were thoroughly impressed with the entire operation and we would certainly recommend you to anyone else considering a similar event. "

"I just wanted to say a very big thank you to you all for a most memorable ceilidh at Ross and Susie’s wedding on 6th October. We have had many compliments on your ceilidh band and the dancing, and with many coming from a bunch of southerners, that is praise indeed! The calling and walk-throughs were just right and enabled anyone who wanted to, to join in. I was so pleased to see the dance floor full all night and everyone having such fun. Your playlist was very well thought out with a good array of well known dances and one or two lesser known but all good fun and not so complicated, all with tunes of a good pace. My sister came off after dancing the Cumberland Square (?) saying “That was great, I’ve always wanted to learn that one!” My knees have not recovered yet from all the dancing- but I wouldn’t have it any other way! I am sure Ross and Susie will thank you themselves in due course. In the meantime I shall thank you once again. I would not hesitate to recommend you to friends and family for a great ceilidh night."

Perhaps the best word of praise came from an Irish friend, who sat next to me after you had started playing and said, "These guys seem to know what they are doing." - believe me, coming from him that is high praise indeed!
